Women win 5-4 while men fall in tight 6-3 dual

April 9, 2014-The Emporia State tennis teams split their duals with Rockhurst on Wednesday afternoon with the Hornet women winning 5-4 and the men falling 6-3.

The women jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles beginning with an 8-3 win at #1 by Nicole Jara and Tawni Griffey.  The #2 team of Somer Schmidt and Amy Fugit picked up the other point with an 8-5 win.  The Hornets got singles victories at #2, #3 and #6 to secure the team win.  Griffey won 6-2, 7-5 at #2, Taylor Smith picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at #3 while Fugit had a 6-4, 6-0 win at #6 singles.

The Hornet men battled with the Hawks as two of the singles matches went to the third set tiebreaker.  Andrew Davids and Jonathan Butron picked up an 8-4 win at #2 doubles as Emporia State trailed 2-1 headed to single play.  Keenan Smith came through with a straight sets win at #3 singles, 6-1, 6-4 while Diego Prudencio prevailed in a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) win at #1 singles.

Both teams are back in action on Friday on the road.  The women play at Ft. Hays State in an MIAA dual while the men take on Hastings (Neb.) in non-conference action.
