March 12, 2014-The Emporia State women won two of three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches on the way to a 7-2 win over Washburn at the WU Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The Hornets got wins from Nicole Jara and Tawni Griffey at #1 doubles and Taylor Smith and Jennifer Gerhardt at #2 doubles to take the lead going into singles play.
Jara won 6-4, 6-2 at #1 singles, Griffey took a 6-2, 6-4 win at #2 and Somer Schmidt won 6-4, 6-0 at #6 singles. Amy Fugit won the only match that went to three sets with a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) victory at #5 singles. Smith had the other win for Emporia State when her opponent retired with Smith leading 6-3, 6-0.
The Hornets will begin a five day road trip on Friday to the St. Louis area. The women will take on Maryville while the men play Lindenwood.
