January 18, 2014-The Emporia State men and women combined to win 14 of 29 individual events as they swept the team titles at the Third Annual Van Nelson Invitational in St. Cloud, Minn. The men won 128-82 over the host Huskies with Concordia-St. Paul in third with 71 points. The women won 123-85 over St. Cloud State with CSP in third with 57 points.
Nikki Wetstein led the Emporia State women with provisional qualifying times in two wins. She ran 8.79 to win the 60m hurdles and went 37-09.25 (11.51m) to capture first in the triple jump, both with provisional marks.
Emporia State also got first place performances from Taylor Stueve in the 800m, Morgan Brant in the high jump, Maggie Wilson in the pole vault and Morgan Gilliland in the weight throw.
The Hornet men had three individuals with first place finishes. Daniel Claassen won the 800m and the mile while Ryan Dickson won the 60m and was a member of the 4x400m relay team along with 200m champion Duke Tibbs. Jordan Manning won the high jump with a provisional mark of 6-08.75 (2.05m) and was the only qualifier for the men's team. Emporia State also got first place finishes from Grady Goff in the 600m, Jonathan Wernli in the triple jump and the 4xd400m relay of Dickson, Tibbs, Payson Maydew and Ashton Proctor.
Emporia State is back in action on January 24 at the UCM Invite in Warrensburg, Mo.
