January 18, 2013-The Emporia State men’s and women’s track and field teams swept the team titles at the UCM Invite in Warrensburg, Mo. The #17 men’s team won by 21 points over #19 Pittsburg State and 52 over #10 Central Missouri while the women’s team defeated #10 Central Missouri by 20 points.
The Hornet men won five event championships to go with an automatic and five provisional qualifiers on the day.
National leader Briar Ploude cleared the seven foot mark in the high jump for his third straight meet. He went 7-01.75 (2.18m) for the win and his third automatic qualifier of the season. Marcus Calleja was second, clearing 6-09.75 (2.08m) to provisionally qualify as well.
Another national leader Andrew Etheridge led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 60 hurdles for the Hornets. He ran 8.17 to beat out teammates Tyler Swalley at 8.22 and Gannon Mack at 8.31 as all three hit the provisional mark both in the prelims and finals.
Donald Wilcox picked up the other provisional qualifier for the men. He jumped 23-01.25 (7.04m) to place second and rank 15th nationally in the long jump.
The Hornets got event championships from Derwin Hall in the 60m, Gannon Mack in the 400m and the distance medley relay team of Daniel Claassen, Travis Sipe, Alex Skinner, and Jacob Bull.
The Emporia State women won five events as well with four provisional qualifiers
Nikki Wetstein was a double winner for the Emporia State women. She won the 60m hurdles in a provisional qualifying mark of 8.95 and picked up the win in the triple jump as well.
Maggie Wilson won the pole vault at 11-05.75 (3.50m) to provisionally qualify for the national meet. Wilson won on misses over teammate Alaina Fairbanks, who also cleared 11-05.75 (3.50m) to hit the provisional mark.
Carmen King had the other provisional qualifier for Emporia State as she ran 7.77 to finish third in the 60m.
Marqueita Marisettein the 400m and Carmen King in the long jump had the other event championships for the Emporia State women.
Emporia State is scheduled to be back in action next weekend at the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence, Kan.
