MEMORIES ARE MADE IN MAY
Emporia State begins the true championship portion of the schedule this weekend with the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pittsburg, Kan. The three day championship event will be held at the new Pitt State Outdoor Track Facility on the campus of Pittsburg State.
LAST LAP
Emporia State sent a group of athletes to Hays, Kan. last Thursday for the Alex Francis Classic and came back with three event champions and 11 top three finishes.
Lou Dumas ran 14.21 to win the women's 100m hurdles. Her time of 14.21 moved her past Deandra Doubrava's time of 14.22 at the 1999 MIAA Championships for third all-time at Emporia State.
She was joined by
Scarlett Begley,
Ava Markley and
Isabella Davie to run 4:06.51 and win the 4x400m relay.
Mason Bina finished second in a time of 2:18.68 in the women's 800m while
Alexia Lewis went 5.63m (18-05.75) to place second in the long jump.
Emmanuel Dukpe ran a provisional qualifying time of 47.50 to win the 400m to highlight the men's action.
Max Neeley cleared 4.71m (15-05.50) to finish third in the men's pole vault.
THE COACH
Seth Mischke is in his third year as the head coach for the Emporia State track and field programs. The Hornets have produced six MIAA individual champions, seven First-Team All-Americans and five school records under his leadership. Before coming to Emporia State he spent one year at Chadron State. Eagle throwers earned five All-America awards and four RMAC Championships. Prior to Chadron State, Mischke spent 11 seasons as the head track and field coach at Black Hills State University. The Yellow Jackets produced two individual national champions, 18 All-America earners, 18 conference champions, and more than 100 All-RMAC honorees under his guidance. Mischke was the head coach at St. Cloud State for 12 years. During his tenure at SCSU, the Huskies had 44 All-Americans and one national champion.
A LOOK AT THE MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
After chasing marks for the majority of the outdoor season, the focus for this weekend turns to places at the MIAA Outdoor Track &U Field Championships. Based on data available from TFRRS and not actual entries, the Hornets are projected as finishing in sixth place on the men's side and eighth place for the women. The big scoring areas for the Hornet men look to be in the sprints where they could score 23 points in the 100m, 200m and 400m based on the current performance list. The throws could account for another 15 points in the shot and javelin with nine points from the relays, 16 from the decathlon and eight in the distance events.
The women would also be led by the sprints with 26 points coming in the 100m, 200m and 400m. The relays are projected for 11 points with 12 from the heptathlon.
HOW TOUGH IS IT?
There are five MIAA men's teams and four women's teams in the Top 25 of this week's United State's Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Ratings. There are a total of nine men's teams nationally ranke with eight in the Top 50. The Association has eight women's teams ranked, all in the top 50. The Hornet women are ranked #36 while the Emporia State men are ranked #38 nationally.
The top mark in the nation is held by an MIAA athlete in nine different events, six by the men and three by the women. There are a total of 68 marks by MIAA athletes representing eight different schools ranked in the top ten of the nation in the 42 events in the national championships program for NCAA Divisin II. The MIAA has the top "event squad" in 13 different events, eight women and five men, with four different schools represented. The event squad list is based on the top four peroformers from a school in one event.
UP NEXT
The next week of competition is fluid with the potential to hit several "Last Chance" meets in the pursuit of a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The National Championships will begin on May 21 at Welch Stadium and Witten Track in Emporia.
TRACK TOWN USA - DIVISION II STYLE
Emporia State's Welch Stadium and Zola Witten Track will host the 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. It will be the fifth time that Welch Stadium has played host to the national championships.
Welch Stadium previously served as the host site for the National Championships in 1995, 1999, 2006, and 2024 with the first meet in 1995 bringing 450 student-athletes to Emporia. The 2026 meet is scheduled to bring 754 student-athletes, nearly 200 coaches and over 100 officials to the Flint Hills over the Memorial Day weekend.
The 2026 Championships are scheduled for May 21-23.
During championship week, the NCAA Committee will come to Emporia on Monday with the first practice time available on Tuesday. Wednesday of championship week will see a variety of coaches and officials meetings before the actual competition begin on Thursday. The meet will wrap up on Saturday evening.
After playing host to the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Emporia State was the site of the 2025 MIAA Outdoor Championships. It was the seventh time Welch Stadium has served as host of the conference championships since 1997. Welch Stadium and Witten Track are back on the schedule to host the 2027 MIAA Outdoor Championships as well.
HORNETS IN THE MIAA TOP TEN
Emporia State has combined for 33 marks that are ranked in the top ten of the MIAA in 22 different events.
For the men
Ezekiel Seamster is ranked second in the Association in the 100m at 10.25 and third with a time of 21.07 in the 200m.
Brooks Lowe has the second best mark at 69.85m (229-2) in the javelin.
Hunter Dylan is third with a time of 30:33.44 in the 10,000m run.

Israel Domeh is fourth in the MIAA in the 200m at 21.09 and his 10.45 ranks seventh in the 100m.

Luke Grace is fourth in the decathlon with 6540 points.

Zach Sulzen-Watson went 16.85m (55-3.50) and is ranked seventh in the shot put.
Gage Chapman has a time of 33:19.75 to rank seventh in the 10,000m.
Carson Fouard is ninth with a time of 34:24.19 in the 10,000m.
Max Neeley has cleared 4.97m (16-3.50) to rank tenth in the pole vault.
Stella Agbokpah has the top time in the MIAA in 200m at 23.14 and is second with a time of 11.41 in the 100m.

Barbara Bentum has three individual marks in the top ten. She is fourth in the 200m at 23.92, ranks sixth at 11.71 in the 100m and is seventh with a time of 55.67 in the 400m.
Isabella Davie has a top ten mark in three events as well. She scored 5057 points to rank fourth in the heptathlon, and is tenth tenth with a time of 2:15.92 in the 800m and a mark of 1.63m (5-4.25) in the high jump.

Lou Dumas is eighth in the heptathlon with 4596 points and ran 14.21 to rank ninth in the 100m hurdles.
Scarlett Begley is tenth in the heptathlon with 4272 points.
Arriana Johnson has a time of 1:05.30 to rank tenth in the 400m hurdles.
HORNETS IN THE ESU ALL-TIME TOP FIVE OUTDOORS
A total of 18 current Hornets have a combined for 22 top five individual outdoor marks in 17 events all-time at Emporia State with four school records.
Stella Agbokpah in the top five in two individual events. She has the school record in the 100m with an 11.41 at the ESU Relays and the 200m after running 23.07 at the Jo Meaker Classic.
Isabella Davie scored 5057 points at the Jo Meaker Classic and Multis this year to rank second in the heptathlon.
Mia Manley cleared 3.87m (12-08.25) at the 2025 ESU Relays to rank second all-time in the women's pole vault.
Barbara Bentum is in the top five of three different events at Emporia State. She is ranked third at Emporia State in the women's 200m with a time of 23.87 set at this year's Jo Meaker Classic and the women's 400m with a time of 55.67 at the ESU Relays while ranking fourth in the 100m at 11.71 at the ESU Spring Open.
Lou Dumas ran 14.41 in the 110m hurdles at the ESU Relays to rank fifth all-time at Emporia State.
Emma Bartholome is ranked fifth with a time of 11:54.30 in the women's 3000m steeplechase at the 2025 Midwest Classic. She is red shirting this outdoor season.
Madison Vermetten is ranked fifth with a throw of 52.47m (172-02) in the women's hammer at the 2025 Kansas Relays.
Ty Anderson is the school record holder in the men's 100m at 10.13 at the 2025 NCAA Championships. He is injured and will likely redshirt
Emmanuel Dukpe is the school record holder in the men's 400m with a 46.29 at last year's NCAA Championships. He also ran a leg on the school record 4x400m relay that ran 3:06.66 at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Dylan Hunter is second in the men's 10,000m after running 30:33.44 at the ESU Spring Open this year.
Jonah Remsberg is in the top five in two individual events. He is second in the men's decathlon with 7,033 points and is fifth in the pole vault after clearing 4.75m (15-07) both at the Jo Meaker Multis last year. He is injured and will likely redshirt
Trenden Collins is ranked second in the men's high jump after clearing 2.14m (7-00.25) at the 2024 Concordia Qualifier. He is recovering from a football injury
Max Neeley is second in the men's pole vault after going 5.08m (16-08) at the Loper Twilight last year.
Ezekiel Seamster is ranked second all-time in the men's 100m with a time of 10.25 at the ESU Relays.
Kole Manley is ranked third with a toss of 70.21m (230-04) in the men's javelin at the ESU Relays last year.
Brooks Lowe threw the men's javelin 69.85m (229-02) at this year's ESU Midwest Classic to rank fourth all-time at ESU.

PROVISIONAL QUALIFIERS
The Hornets have 17 athletes with 19 provisional qualifying marks in 13 events for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
Stella Agbokpah is third in the nation in women's 200m and eighth in the 100m. She ran a school record of 23.07 at the Jo Meaker Classic that converts to 23.14 at altitude in the 200m. She ran a school record 11.41 to win the 100m at the ESU Relays.
Isabella Davie scored 5057 points at the Jo Meaker Classic and Multis to rank 11th in the nation in the heptathlon. She is the second Hornet to go over 5000 points in the heptathlon.
Barbara Bentum ran a time of 23.92 at the Jayhawk Spring Fling that is currently ranked #30 in the nation in the 200m. She ran the third fastest 200m in ESU history at 23.87 at the Jo Meaker Classic, but it converts to 23.94 for altitude.
Harper Schoendaller had a provisional mark of 43.34m (142-02) at the ESU Relays to rank 34th in the nation in the women's javelin.
Lou Dumas had a provisional qualifying total of 4596 points to rank 43rd in the nation in the womens heptathlon at the Midwest Classic.
Madison Vermetten went 45.65m (149-09) at the Midwest Classic for a provisional qualifier in the women's discus that ranks 47th in the nation.
Brooks Lowe is currently ranked seventh in the nation with a provisional qualifying mark of 69.85m (229-08) to win the men's javelin at the ESU Midwest Classic.
Connor Deters is ranked eighth in the nation in the men's shot put after going 18.03m (59-02) to win the Grizzly Gold Invite. He now sets fourth all-time at Emporia State in the event.

Zach Sulzen-Watson is ranked 29th in the nation in the shot put after reaching 16.85m (55-03.50) in the shot put at the Grizzly Gold Invite.
Mitch Budke is ranked 32nd in the men's javelin with a mark of 63.19m (207-04) at the ESU Midwest Classic.
Max Neeley cleared 4.97m (16-03.5) in the men's pole vault at the ESU Relays to rank 35th in the nation.
Israel Domeh ran a provisional qualifier of 21.09 to win the men's 200m at the Jayhawk Spring Fling. He is currently ranked 50th in the nation.
The 4x400m relay team of
Braden Lipgens, Domeh,
Andrew Holton and Dukpe are ranked #30 after running a 3:11.22 that converts to 3:11.66 for altitude at the Joe Meaker Classic. Lipgens, Seamster, Holton and Dukpe ran 3:11.79 at the ESU Relays to rank 31st in the 4x400m relay.
OTHER HORNET RETURNING PROVISIONALS
Kole Manley was fifth in the nation in the javelin in the regular season with a toss of 70.21m (230-4) at the ESU Relays that ranks third all-time for the Hornets. He is injured and likely redshirting this season.
Ty Anderson was ranked 11th in the nation in the 60m after running a school record 6.68 in the prelims at the MIAA Championships. He finished eighth in the finals with a time of 6.75 at the MIAA Championships. He placed tenth in the 60m at the 2025 Indoor Championships. He was also ranked 35th in the nation in the long jump with a mark of 7.29m (23-11) at the MIAA Championships and 40th nationally with a time of 21.42 in the 200m at the Washburn Open. He will red-shirt this season with an injury.
Jonah Remsberg was ranked tenth in the nation after winning the MIAA Championship in the heptathlon with 5,265 points. He is ranked second all-time at Emporia State in the heptathlon. He was also ranked 46th in the nation in the long jump with a mark of 7.23m (23-8.75) during his heptathlon in Colorado Springs. He will red-shirt this season with an injury.
Trenden Collins cleared 2.04m (6-8.25) in the high jump at the Bearcat Invite to rank 38th nationally. Collins may end up redshirting the track season due to an injury suffered during football season.
Ally Trier was 32nd in the nation in the women's javelin with a throw of 43.34m (142-2) at the MIAA Championships.
MIAA PRESEASON POLLS
The Emporia State men are picked for seventh and the women eighth in the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Preseason Coaches Poll. The Pittsburg State men and women are the conference preseason favorites in both polls.
