LET'S TRY THIS AGAIN
After being snowed out of last week's competition at Mizzou, Emporia State travels up the Turnpike to take part in the two day WU Open in Topeka, Kan.

LAST LAP
In a competition that saw the top six finishers hit a provisional qualifier Emporia State's Luke Grace finished third with 5095 points in the heptathlon at the Colorado Running Club Pre-Holiday Multis in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Grace started the day with a personal best of 8.59 in the 60m hurdles to maintain second place overall.  He cleared 3.90m (12-089.50) to place sixth in the pole vault and drop into third place entering the final event. He ran the 1000m in 3:02.02 to place sixth and hold onto third place overall.  His 5095 points will have him ranked in the top five of the nation after conversions for altitude and track size.
Luke Hampl finished in 13th place with 4013 points while John Henry was 16th with 3431 points.
The Emporia State women came away with two NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifiers from Colorado Springs.
Isabella Davie and Lou Dumas each placed in the top six with provisional marks in the women's pentathlon.  Davie finished fourth with a provisional mark of 3,411 points while Dumas had a provisional total of 3,315 points to place sixth overall.   Davie used a strong final event to move up four places into fourth place.  She ran 2:29.07 to place third in the 800m.  Dumas started out strong winning the 60m hurdles in 8.88 and was in second for most of the competition before running 2:57.97 in the 800 to drop down to sixth place.
Ava Markley was tenth with 3048 points while Scarlett Begley finished in 11th place with 3039 points. Markley's best individual event was the 800m as she ran 2:32.36 to finish in fourth place.  Begley was second in the women's high jump, clearing 1.61m (5-3.25) to finish second.

THE COACH
Seth Mischke is in his third year as the head coach for the Emporia State track and field programs. The Hornets have produced six MIAA individual champions and seven All-Americans in the first two years under his leadership. Before coming to Emporia State he spent one year at Chadron State. Eagle throwers earned five All-America awards and four RMAC Championships. Prior to Chadron State, Mischke spent 11 seasons as the head track and field coach at Black Hills State University. The Yellow Jackets produced two individual national champions, 18 All-America earners, 18 conference champions, and more than 100 All-RMAC honorees under his guidance. Mischke was the head coach at St. Cloud State for 12 years. During his tenure at SCSU, the Huskies had 44 All-Americans and one national champion.

LAST YEAR'S WU OPEN
Emporia State came away with four more provisional qualifying marks and an event championship at last year's WU Open.
Connor Deters highlighted the competition for Emporia State as he won the men's shot put with a provisional qualifying mark of 16.92m (55-6.25) that ranked in the top five all-time for the Hornets. He unleashed the personal best on his first throw of the competition while five of his six attempts passed the provisional mark.
The day started off with provisional qualifiers in both multi-events.  Luke Grace finished third in the men's heptathlon with 4,979 points while Isabella Davie place third in the women's pentathlon with 3,330 points.  Davie was able to move up ten spots over the last two events, thanks in part to a pentathlon meet record of 2:20.46 in the 800m.
Max Neeley cleared the highest bar in the men's invitational pole vault but placed second due to misses.  His provisional qualifier of 4.87m (15-11.75) was just one centimeter from his career best that ranks fourth all-time at Emporia State.
Ty Anderson hit the provisional mark in both the semifinals and finals of the men's 60m.  He was clocked in 6.81 in the semifinals and came back with a 6.77 to place sixth.
