March 23, 2023-Day one of the multi-events at the ESU Relays saw Emporia State come away with two athletes in third place heading into Friday's final day of the heptathlon and decathlon.
 
Aren Trost posted career bests in four of five events and sits in third place with a total of 3,293 points in the decathlon.  He ran a personal best of 11.63 in the 100m and was in fifth place after the first event.  He tied his all-time best in the long jump with a mark of 6.19m (20-3.75) to place third in the event and move up to third overall.  He improved his shot put career best by almost nine inches it a mark of 13.73m (45-0.5) to win that portion of the competition and move within 43 points of first place after three events.  His only non-PR of the day came in the high jump where he cleared 1.68m (5-6) to place fifth.  In the final event of the day he shave over half a second off of his previous best in the 400m, running 52.56 to place third and build and over 300 point lead over the fourth place competitor.
 
Abigael Reid and Victoria Pettay are both in the top six after day one of the heptathlon. Reid is in third place with 2,817 points while Pettay is sixth with 2,484 points.  Reid was in fourth place after the 100h where she ran a 15.28 to place fourth. Pettay turned in a career best 16.28 in the hurdles and was in eighth place after one event.  In the high jump Reid cleared 1.53m (5-00.25) to remain fourth overall while Pettay went over 1.50m (4-11) and moved up one spot to seventh overall. Reid went 10.11m (33-2) to place fourth in the shot put and stay in fourth place overall. Pettay had a mark of 9.77m (32-0.75) that placed her fifth in the shot and moved her up one spot to fifth overall heading into the final event. Reid cranked out a 25.74 in the 200m to finish second and move up to third in the overall standings. Pettay ran 27.52 to place seventh in the 200m and drop back to sixth in the overall standings.
 
Day two of the ESU Relays gets underway at 10:00 a.m. with the decathlon 110m hurdles for the men while the women will begin with the heptathlon long jump at 10:30 a.m.  Field events will begin the main portion of the meet with the women's hammer, men's discus, men's open pole vault, and women's open high jump at 3:00 p.m.  Track events will begin at 4:00 p.m. with the 3000m steeplechase.
