Sandora Sasaki was named MIAA Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and fourth time this season.
Sasaki began the week with 33 kills across four sets against Nebraska-Kearney, which is the most kills in a four-set match in Division II this season and the second-most in any match. Sasaki hit .316 against the Lopers.
Her 32 kills in the match against the Lopers is the most by a Hornet volleyball player in the rally scoring era. The 33 kills are the most by a MIAA player since Barbara Jackson (Central Oklahoma) had 33 in a 3-1 loss to UCM on November 21, 2015 in the MIAA Tournament Championship match. She was three kills shy of the Emporia State school record of 35 set by Kendra Dawson in a five-set win over Rockhurst on October 1, 1991.
She capped off the week with 18 kills against Missouri Western and 17 kills against Northwest Missouri in a pair of four-set matches.. Following the matches against the Griffons and Bearcats, Sasaki extended her streak of double-digit kills to 24 straight matches to begin the season. It is the longest such streak by a Hornet since Arica Shepard reached double figures in the final 28 matches of the 2009 season. It is the longest streak to start a season by a Hornet since the NCAA moved to 25-point sets in 2008.
Sasaki currently leads the MIAA with 4.78 kills per set, which also ranks fourth in Division II. Her total kills of 416 also leads the MIAA and is fifth in the nation.
Emporia State will return to action on Friday, November 3 as they return home to take on Pittsburg State for Senior Night. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from White Auditorium.
