SUNFLOWER SHOWDOWNS
Emporia State returns to the Sunflower State with a pair of non-conference matchups against MIAA teams. The Hornets will take on the Ichabods in the Turnpike Tussle before taking on Fort Hays State in their home opener.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hornets traveled to North Dakota for a pair of matches against UMary and Minot State. Emporia State fell 2-1 against UMary before closing out the trip with a record-setting 5-1 win over Minot State.
Mackenzie Dimarco scored twice to become the Hornets career goals leader while
Hannah Woolery recorded three assists to become the all-time assists leader in Hornet history.
THE COACHES
Bryan Sailer is 95-78-25 in his tenth year at Emporia State and is the winningest coach in program history and sixth winningest coach in MIAA history. He has a career record of 154-101-27 that includes coaching four years at the community college level. He has led the Hornets to eight straight .500 or better regular seasons, four straight MIAA Tournaments and their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. He is 12-4-3 against Washburn and 5-8-5 against Fort Hays State.
Davy Phillips is 36-36-7 in his sixth season at Washburn. He is 2-6 against Emporia State
Tyson John is 3-0-1 in his first season at FHSU. This is his first meeting against Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 1-3 on the season after splitting their last two games in North Dakota.
Hannah Woolery leads the way with seven points with two goals and three assists while
Mackenzie Dimarco has five points with two goals and an assist of her own.

ABOUT WASHBURN
The Ichabods are 3-0-1 to begin the season and are led by Jaedyn Johnson in attack who has scored three goals and added an assist to lead Washburn with seven points. Six other players have scored this season to help the Ichabods outscore their opponents 10-3 through four matches.

Washburn leads the all-time series 16-15-4.

The Hornets traveled to Topeka on the final weekend of the regular season as the Ichabods took the match 1-0 over the Hornets.
ABOUT FORT HAYS STATE
The Tigers have started the season 3-0-1 and have only allowed one goal through the first four matches. Hannah Mares has led the way with two goals and an assist. Gracen Chaney, Britney Arneson and Montserrat Diaz have also scored one goal each.

Last season, the Hornets opened MIAA play with a home match against the Tigers. Emporia State took the match 1-0 after a tenth minute solo goal from
Mackenzie Dimarco.Dimarco received the ball in midfield and took on the Tiger defense to score the game-winning goal.
UP NEXT
Emporia State will hit the road again for a pair of matchups. The Hornets will take on Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, Sept. 16 in their final non-conference matchup before playing the rematch against Fort Hays State on Sunday, Sept. 18 to begin MIAA action.

Forward
Mackenzie Dimarco (Jr./Pleasant Hill, Mo.) has two goals and one assist this season on 14 shots with nine attempts on goal. Against Minot State, she scored a pair of goals in the 5-1 victory and she officially passed Brandie Booth for career goals with 40. IWith 86 points she is one point behind Booth for most all-time in Hornet history.
Last season, she was named Second Team All-American while also earning First-Team All-MIAA and All-Central region honors. She ranked third in the nation in total goals, fifth in game winning goals and in shots on goal per game, and seventh in goals per game and total points. She had her second career hat trick against Neb.-Kearney on the way to the second of her three MIAA Offensive Player of the Week awards. She tied the MIAA record of 20 goals in a season during the 2019 campaign that was orignally set by Jada Scott of Central Missouri a year prior in 2018.
WOOLY BULLY
Midfielder
Hannah Woolery (Jr./Overbrook, Kan.) has recorded two goals and three assists in the first four games of the season with seven points to lead the Hornets. Against Minot State, she recorded three assists and added a goal shortly after the halftime break for a five point afternoon. Her trio of assists moved Woolery into first place all-time in Hornet soccer history with 17 career assists.
Woolery earned First-Team All-MIAA and First-Team All-Region honors last season. She had a goal and two assists against Central Missouri and had two multiple goal games last season, with the second of those two coming in a 2-1 victory over Washburn which earned her MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors. She was an honorable mention All-MIAA performer as a freshman in 2019.
Off the pitch she was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District performer with a 3.93 GPA in English.
WARM COAT
Defender
Joanie Westcoat (Jr./Lee's Summit, Mo.) has played the second most minutes through the first four matches for the Hornets and is a centerpiece of the Hornet backline.
She was named Third-Team All-MIAA last season. She tied for fifth in the MIAA and on the Emporia State single season assist list with six in 2021. She scored three goals last season including the game-winner during the Hornets' comeback 5-3 victory over Northeastern State.She helped lead a Hornet defense that allowed an MIAA low 7.9 shots on goal per match last year, a full two shots fewer than the second place team.
She was twice named Defender of the Week in the MIAA last year.
DREAM A LITTLE DREAM
Midfielder
Aislinn Hughes (Sr./McPherson, Kan.) has started all four matches to continue her tradition of playing in every match of her Hornet career. She has played in 309 minutes through the first few matches and scored her first goal of the season against Minot State. It was her ninth game-winning goal of her career which ranks third in Hornet soccer history.
She was named third-team All-MIAA in 2021 after earning honorable mention in 2019. She was second in the MIAA with six game winning goals and was fourth with 11 total goals last season. She had the game tying and game winning goals in Emporia State's 4-3 double overtime win against Central Missouri and then scored the game winner in the MIAA Championship match against the Jennies.
SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE
Midfielder
Angela Palmer (Jr./Wichita, Kan.) has played in all four games this season including making three starts and has played in 26 of 27 games since being at Emporia State. Palmer scored her first career last weekend against UMary in the second half. She has been an important role player in the midfield for the Hornets since arriving on campus for the Hornets.
HEY ALEXIS
Forward
Alexis Cole (Sr./Leavenworth, Kan.) has started in all four games this year and has appeared in 46 of 47 matches in her career. Cole has transtitioned to a starting role as she played the sixth most minutes on the Hornet roster. She scored in the last match out against Minot State with a second half goal on a
Hannah Woolery assist. Her first career goal came last season in the second half against Northwest Missouri in the first round of the NCAA Tournament after she redirected a loose ball in the box to solidify the Hornets' 2-0 win over the Bearcats.
IN GOAL
Keepers
Tori Bailey (Sr./Papillion, Neb.) and
Mackenzi Goen (Fr./Hurst, Texas) have split time in goal this season.
Bailey has started three of the four matches but left the UMary game with an injury. She has recorded 14 saves in 187:40 of action.
Goen has played in three matches and started at Minot State for the injured Bailey. She had eight saves in 172:20 worth of action.
HORNET NEWCOMERS
Defender
Abby Bachman (Fr./Wichita, Kan.) has started all four matches in her first season with the Hornets and has played the most minutes through the first two weeks including all 90 minutes in the last three matches.
Defender
Asta Kristindottir (Fr./Seltjarnarnes, Iceland) has started three matches in defense in her first season for Emporia State. She has played all 90 minutes in one match and has recorded two shots with one on goal through the first four matches of the season.
Forward
Destiny Hoy (Fr./Wichita, Kan.) has started all four matches and played more than half the minutes through the first four matches of her freshman season with the Hornets. She recorded her first two shots of her career in the last match out against Minot State.
In addition, seven more newcomers have played in a match for the Hornets this season with six having played in multiple matches. Mackenzie Goen,
Mikayla Lampe and
Ella Ruliffson have played in three or more matches through the first two weeks of the season.
TOUGH TEST
The 2022 schedule will likely prove to be the most difficult in the history of the ESU Soccer program. Over the course of 18 scheduled matches for the Hornets, only three will take place against a team that posted below a .500 record last season. Once entering MIAA action, will take on three opponents who made an appearance in the Central Region Tournament last season. The conference slate will begin on Sunday, September 18 when the Hornets travel west to take on Fort Hays State for the second matchup between the two teams and will be the first of three straight road matches to begin the MIAA season. To end the regular season, Emporia State will host four straight matches with the final matchup being against the rival Washburn Ichabods in the Turnpike Tussle.
RECORD BOOK
Since 2018 Emporia State has set seven individual single season school records and moved into the top three in a trio of other categories. Hornets have also set nine individual career records and rank second in another category. Two new records were set in the last match against Minot State with
Mackenzie Dimarco claiming the all-time goals record with 40 after a brace the last time out.
Hannah Woolery also broke the career assists record with a hattrick of assists against Minot State.
Last season
Mackenzie Dimarco tied the MIAA single season record with 20 goals scored in 23 matches. She holds Emporia State single season records for points, points per game, goals, goals per game, game winning goals, shots attempted, and shots per game. She is the career record holder for goals, game winning goals, points per match, goals per match, shots, and shots on goal.
Hannah Woolery holds the career record for assists and ranks second in single season assists, third in single season assists per match and shots per match. Â
Aislinn Hughes ranks third in both single season and career game winning goals.
Joanie Westcoat is fifth in single season assists after recording six last season.
MIAA NOTES
With the first in-season rankings of 2022, the MIAA has two teams ranked inside the top 20 and another receiving votes in the latest poll. With the most recent national poll came the first Central Region Poll of the season and the MIAA holds six of the top ten position with another place occupied by UMary, who the Hornets took on in their trip to North Dakota. 2021 was the first season in MIAA history that both participants in the Tournament Championship Match were nationally ranked in the Top 25.
IN THE CLASSROOM
Emporia State had a total of 18 of the 23 student-athletes on their roster named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for their work in the classroom last year, highlighted by three Hornets being named MIAA Scholar-Athletes. In addition to recognition from the MIAA, all 14 returners from last year's team were named to the Emporia State AD Honor Roll in 2021.
