September 24, 2022 - Emporia State fell in four sets to Newman on Saturday in a road MIAA matchup.
The first set went the way of the Hornets early on as Emporia State opened an 11-6 lead over Newman. The Jets worked to climb back into the set as they tied the score on multiple occasions but were stifled by the Hornets. Late in the set, Newman was able to finally take the lead over Emporia State 21-20. In response, the Hornets scored five of the next seven points to close out the first set victory 25-23 after
Leah Mach recorded three kills in the final stretch.
Newman and Emporia State stayed close throughout much of the second set. The largest lead throughout the second set came from Newman as they led the Hornets 13-10 midway through the set. Emporia State scored four of the next five points including a pair of
Zuzanna Buchnajzer kills to regain the lead 15-14. Newman would reclaim the lead late in the set as they tied the match 1-1.
In the third set, Newman took advantage early and often as they scored the first four points and eventually led 9-3 over the Hornets. After Emporia State closed the gap to 13-9, Newman scored the next eight points to lead 21-9 as they went on to win the set 25-12. Emporia State was unable swing the momentum in their favor in the fourth set as Newman jumped out to another early lead over the Hornets. The gap was closed to 16-14 by the Hornets before Newman rallied again to score five straight points on route to a 25-18 win in the set and a 3-1 victory in the match.
Leah Mach led the Hornets with 13 kills while
Shelby Ebert added 10 kills of her own.
Riley Bernskoetter and
Ainslee Stepp each reached 20 assists in the match with 22 and 20 respectively.
Leah Mach led the way with 22 digs while
Megan Stretton added 20.
Emporia State will be in action on Friday, September 30 as they travel to Pittsburg State to take on the Gorillas. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
