EMPORIA STATE CROSS COUNTRY SWEEPS TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL TITLES AT ESU INVITATIONAL

September 23, 2022-It was a fantastic start for Emporia State on the new Trusler Sports Complex cross country course as the Hornet men and women swept both the individual and team titles at the ESU Invitational on Friday evening.
 
Tayler Williams won the inaugural race on the Trusler course with a time of 19:18.78 over the five kilometers.  She finished 35 seconds in front of runner-up Tiajhae Nez of Haskell Indian Nations University.  Ayden Kearney was the second Hornet to finish as she ran 20:08.53 to place fourth overall.  Irina Honc placed eighth with a time of 20:22.09 to round out the top ten finishers for the Hornets.  Hannah Showalter cracked 21 minutes as well, running 20:49.20 to finish in 12th place.  Mason Bina rounded out the scoring for Emporia State with a time of 21:35.02 to place 18th overall. The Hornets won the team title with 38 points.
 
Tyler Swift led a dominating performance by the Hornet men as they placed six people in the top ten on the way to the team title.  Swift finished first overall in a time of 25:57.08 to finish ten seconds in front of teammate Jaime Diaz who ran 26:07.83 over the eight kilomters. Henry Jones came across in 26:10.17 to finish fourth for the Hornets.  Emporia State then took over the 8, 9, and 10 spots with Cody Achilles running 26:38.48, Asher Moen crossing in 26:41.50 and Luke Gleason finishing in 26:43.98 to round out the top ten.   The Hornets top six runners were all within 46 seconds of each other.
 
Emporia State is back in action next Friday when they travel to Columbia, Mo. to take part in the Gans Creek Invitational hosted by the University of Missouri.  The men are scheduled to run at 10:30 a.m. with the women set to follow at 11:15 a.m.
