HORNETS FALL TO JETS ON FRIDAY NIGHT

Emporia State falls 9-8 to Newman

April 8, 2022 – Emporia State fell 9-8 against Newman on Friday evening from Glennen Field.

Emporia State took an early lead over Newman in the second inning. With two outs and runners on first and third for the Hornets, Sam Chaput doubled to center field to give Emporia State a 2-0 lead over the Jets.

A two-run double from Newman in the third inning tied the game 2-2. The Hornets would respond in the bottom half of the third. With two outs, Sam Chaput tripled into right field before a Blake Carroll RBI single gave Emporia State a 3-2 lead.

Trouble would strike the Hornets in the sixth inning as the Jets recorded five runs in the inning. A sacrifice fly, wild pitch, throwing error and a pair of RBI singles by Newman gave the Jets a 7-3 lead through six innings.

Newman added another run to take an 8-3 lead over Emporia State in the seventh, the Hornets would respond in the bottom half of the inning. After two consecutive outs, TJ Racherbaumer singled to the right side and Dylan Werries drew a walk to set up Kadyn Williams. Williams came through and drove the ball over the right field wall for a three-run home run. Following the home run, Chandler Bloomer worked the count full before drawing a walk to bring up pinch-hitter Quinn Cherry. On a 3-0 count, Cherry skied a fastball down the left field line and just inside the foul pole for a game-tying two-run home run.

The Jets were able to push a lone run across the plate in the eighth inning to take a 9-8 lead over the Hornets. Emporia State was unable to generate a rally in either the eighth or ninth inning and fell to Newman.

Sam Chaput, Noah Geekie and Dylan Werries each recorded two hits in the game. Kadyn Williams went 1-4 with a home run, walk and 3 RBI.

Jarrett Seaton went 5.0 innings on the mound allowing four runs and striking out three batters. Aaron Bechtel went 2.0 innings in relief with four strikeouts.

Emporia State will take on Newman in game two of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon from Glennen Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
