FIVE HOMERS FOR HORNETS IN MIDWEEK MATCHUP WITH BISON

Emporia State falls 10-5 against Oklahoma Baptist; hit five solo home runs

April 26, 2022 - Emporia State dropped their final midweek matchup of the season to Oklahoma Baptist 10-5 on Tuesday afternoon from Glennen Field.

Trouble struck the Hornets on the first pitch as the Bison leadoff hitter took the first pitch of the game to center field for a home run. After Empoira State was unable to score in the bottom of the first inning, Oklahoma Baptist singled to center field with two outs in the second inning to give the Bison a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Hornets homered twice trim the deficit to 3-2. With one out, Dylan Werries took the first pitch of the at-bat to left field for a solo home run. In the next at-bat, senior Jack Maki homered to right field.

The Hornets would eventually take the lead through five innings after a pair of solo home runs in back-to-back plate appearances from TJ Racherbaumer. Racherbaumer homered to left center in the third inning to tie the game, before coming back to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and taking the first pitch he saw to left center a second time to put Emporia State in front 4-3.

Oklahoma Baptist would respond in the sixth inning with a two-out RBI single to tie the game at four.

Emporia State would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning on their fifth solo home run of the game. Sawyer Slayden made his first plate appearance of the game after pinch-running in the sixth inning. On the first pitch of the inning, Slayden crushed a home run to left field as the Hornets took a 5-4 lead heading to the final frame.

After a hit batter and a walk to start the inning, the Hornets would record a strikeout before the Bison recorded five straight hits to score six runs in the inning and take the 10-5 lead.

The Hornets were able to get two runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to score as the Bison took the midweek matchup 10-5.

At the plate, TJ Racherbaumer went 3-4 with two home runs and two RBI. Dylan Werries went 3-5 with a home run and an RBI. Sawyer Slayden, and Jack Maki also hit home runs.

Emporia State travels to the Sooner State for their final MIAA series of the regular season as they take on Central Oklahoma April 29-May 1. First pitch on Friday, April 29 is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
