March 27, 2022-Emporia State ran their winning streak to four games with a double header sweep of Central Missouri on Sunday afternoon in Warrensburg, Mo. The Hornets won both games by the score of 5-2 to even their season record at 16-16 and improve to 5-3 in the MIAA.
Game One
Gracie Rabe went the distance striking out seven as the Hornets won game one 5-2.
The Jennies scored first without the benefit of a hit. Peyton Corrigan was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a sac bunt and scored on a passed ball.
The Hornets responded with three runs in the top of the second.
Harley Sturm doubled in
Maddy Broxterman to tie the game and
Josie Harrison squeezed in
Alexis Dial to give the Hornets the lead.
Emma Furnish made it 3-1 with a single that plated Sturm. Rabe then struck out the side in the bottom of the inning.
Emporia State added a run in the top of the fifth when
Roni Raines hit a sac fly to score
Brittanie Shepherd and make it 4-1.
The Jennies scored another run without a hit in the bottom of the sixth. With one out Abby Allnut struck out but reached first on a wild pitch and went to second on a walk. She took third on a passed ball and would score on a two out wild pitch to make it 4-2 headed to the seventh.
McKensy Glass led off the Hornets half of the seventh with a double and scored on Furnish's single to put Emporia State back up three runs at 5-2 going to the bottom of the seventh. UCM got a pair of infield singles with one out before Rabe recorded a strikeout and a fly ball to end the game.
Emma Furnish was two for three with two RBI while
Maddy Broxterman went two for four with a run scored.
Gracie Rabe gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Game Two
The Hornets got another solid performance in the circle and some timely hitting to win the night cap 5-2.
Maddy Broxterman doubled in
Abbey Ward to give Emporia State a 1-0 lead in the top of the first only to see Central Missouri tie the score in the bottom of the inning. Abbey Fischer had an RBI single to make it 1-1 but
Sydney Righi would get a fly out to end the inning and leave the bases loaded. The Jennies got a sac fly from Aubrie McRoberts to go up 2-1 in the second inning.
The Hornets took the lead for good with a three run fourth inning.
Bailey Flewelling drove in the first run with an RBI single. With the bases loaded
Brittanie Shepherd doubled to left center scoring two and giving Emporia State a 4-2 lead. They would tack on another run in the fifth when Broxterman scored on an infield single by
McKensy Glass to make it 5-2 headed to the bottom of the fifth.
Harley Sturm came on in relief in the bottom of the seventh and worked a 1-2-3 inning to preserve the 5-2 win and double header sweep.
Maddy Broxterman went three for four with a double, an RBI and a run scored while
Brittanie Shepherd drove in two runs with a double.
Sydney Righi scattered eight hits over 6.0 innings, allowing two runs with three strikeouts.
Emporia State will finally make their home debut on Friday, April 1 when they play host to Northwest Missouri. First pitch of the MIAA double header is set for 3:00 p.m. on Turnbull Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
