April 1, 2022-Emporia State softball ran their winning streak to six straight with a double header sweep of Northwest Missouri on Friday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets ended both games by run rule 8-0 in the fifth inning.
Game One
Jayda VanAckeran tossed a six hit shutout in game one with four strikeouts and no walks.
Brittanie Shepherd singled in the bottom of the first, went to second on a passed ball and to third on a ground out. She would score on
Roni Raines single through the left side to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead after one inning. Shepherd would drive in a run in the second with an RBI single that scored pinch runner
Lexi Williams to make it 2-0.
The Hornets kept the line moving in the bottom of the third with two more runs. With one out AlexisDial singled and went to second on
Harley Sturm's single. They both stole a base and then advanced on a throwing error by the Bearcat catcher that allowed Dial to score.
Karly Johnson then drove in Sturm with a double before getting thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple as the Hornets took a 4-0 lead to the fourth.
Broxterman kept the string of scoring in every inning alive in the bottom of the fourth as she singled in Raines to make it 5-0.
Emma Furnish made it 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly that plated Sturm before Raines ended it with a two run single to center that scored
Bailey Flewelling and Johnson to make it 8-0.
Roni Raines went two for three with three RBI and a run scored while
Harley Sturm was two for three with two runs scored.
Game Two
The Hornets got out to an early lead and coasted to another run rule win in the nightcap.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the first
McKensy Glass delivered a two run single that scored
Brittanie Shepherd and
Harley Sturm.
Alexis Dial would then come home on a double steal with Glass to make it 3-0 after an inning.
Maddy Broxterman had the big blow in the second inning. Following walks to
Bailey Flewelling and
Lexi Williams and a hit by pitch by
Abbey Ward Broxterman cleared the bases with a double to left as the Hornets took a 6-0 lead.
After failing to score in the third, the only inning they did not score in the double header, Emporia State added a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Glass that scored Sturm and made it 7-0. After a pair infield singles off the pitcher by Williams and Ward sandwiched around a walk by Shepherd loaded the bases, Sturm ended the game with a single to right center to make it 8-0.
McKensy Glass went two for three with three RBI,
Maddy Broxterman was one for two with a three RBI and
Harley Sturm went two for three with three runs scored and an RBI.
Sydney Righi and
Gracie Rabe combined on the five hit shutout. Righi went 4.0+ innings allowing just five hits and two walks for the win. Rabe came in with two on and no outs in the fifth and retired the side.
Emporia State is back in action on Saturday when they play host to Missouri Western. First pitch of the double header is set for 2:00 p.m. from Turnbull Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
NOTES
The six straight wins is the longest streak in conference play since winning the final eight games of the 2018 regular season.
