February 7, 2022-Emporia State improved to 2-0 on the season with a 3-2 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma on Monday afternoon at the Edmond First Pitch Classic.
Â
The Hornets loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first but did not score.Â
Blake Carroll singled followed by walks to
Javier Pena and
Lukas Rich. SWOSU starter Nate Postlethwait got a pair of strikeouts to end the inning and leave the bases loaded. Both teams would get more chances but neither would score until JC Reed led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to right center that gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Â
Emporia State would answer in the top of the fifth.Â
Sam Chaput led off with a double and went to third on Carroll's infield single. Pena put the Hornets ahead with a two RBI double and went to third on error by the SWOSU second baseman. Rich gave the Hornets an insurance run with an RBI ground out and Emporia State led 3-2 at the midway point.
Â
Peyton Carson went the first 4.0 innings on the mound for the Hornets, giving up one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Jarret Seaton relieved him and after giving up a leadoff single, retired the next nine batters her faced. The Bulldogs finally got to him in the bottom of the eighth when they loaded the bases with no one out on a pair of singles and an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Seaton got Reed on a line out to second for the first out and then struck out Taylan Mullins-Ohm for the second out. After walking Brooks Red to force in a run, Seaton struck out Samuel Fortier to end the inning with the bases loaded and preserve the 3-2 lead.
Â
Carl Aikman worked the ninth for the Hornets and struck out the first batter he faced before allowing a single to Marc Gonzales to bring the winning run to the plate. Lead off hitter Raymon Vingochea then hit a ground ball to second that the Hornets were able to turn into a game ending double play.
Â
Blake Carroll was three for four with a run scored while
Javier Pena went one for four with two RBI and a run scored.Â
