HORNETS PICK UP SPLIT ON DAY TWO OF WASHBURN CLASSIC

Emporia State fall 8-1 to St. Cloud State; come alive against Southwest Minnesota with 8-0 win

February 27, 2022 – Emporia State took home a split on day two of the Washburn Classic with an 8-1 loss to St. Cloud State and a 8-0 win over Southwest Minnesota.

Game 1

After a scoreless first inning by both Emporia State and St. Cloud State, the Huskies took a 2-0 lead over the Hornets with a two-run home run off the bat of Maggie Fitzgerald. Another two-run home run would come for the Huskies in the top of the third inning with Sophie Culhane driving the ball over the left field fence to improve the lead to 4-0.

The lone run for Emporia State would come in the bottom of the third inning as Bailey Flewelling connected on the first pitch and drove it to center field for a solo home run.

St. Cloud State would manage four more runs over the remainder of the game and would claim the game 8-1 over Emporia State.

Bailey Flewelling went 1-2 with a home run and an RBI. Alexis Dial went 2-3 in the game.

Game 2

The Hornets struck first in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Brittanie Shepherd to score Roni Raines. This would prove to be enough for the Hornets in the game as Jayda VanAckeren controlled the game from the circle.

After going silent for a few innings, the Emporia State offense broke out in the late innings. The Hornets scored four runs in the fifth thanks to RBIs from Abbey Ward, Brittanie Shepherd, and Maddy Broxterman. The production continued in the sixth inning with a two-run single from Josie Harrison and another run scoring after a wild pitch to give Emporia State an 8-0 lead over Southwest Minnesota.

Jayda VanAckeren went 6.0 innings allowing only 4 hits and striking out 4 batters to claim the shutout victory in the circle. Brittanie Shepherd and Josie Harrison each recorded 2 RBI to pace the Hornet offense.

Emporia State is back in action on Monday against Minnesota Crookston and Sioux Falls. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
