February 28, 2022 – Emporia State finished the Washburn Classic with a split on the final day with a 6-5 victory over Minnesota Crookston and an 8-7 defeat against Sioux Falls.
Game 1
Minnesota Crookston took an early lead over Emporia State with a run in the top of the first inning.
The Hornets fell would answer back in the second inning with a
Maddy Broxterman RBI single to tie the game.
Harley Sturm would follow the Broxterman single in the next at-bat with a three-run home run to left field to give Emporia State a 4-1 advantage of Minnesota Crookston.
After the Golden Eagles took the lead back in the third inning with four runs of their own,
Abbey Ward and
Brittanie Shepherd each recorded RBI singles to give the Hornets a 6-5 lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
Harley Sturm highlighted the Hornet offense going 2-3 with a home run, 3 RBI and two runs scored in the game.
Brylie Bassett recorded the win in the circle after posting five scoreless innings for Emporia State.
Game 2
Emporia State took the early advantage in their second game of the day against Sioux Falls with a pair of runs in the first inning highlighted by an
Abbey Ward solo home run. After the Cougars took the lead off of a three-run home run,
Roni Raines responded right back with a two-run home run to give the Hornets a 4-3 lead.
Sioux Falls would hit another homerun to tie the game at 4-4 with the Hornets and Cougars each scoring again in the fourth inning to knot the score at 5-5. Sioux Falls managed two more runs to take a 7-5 advantage over Emporia State.
In the sixth inning, a
Brittanie Shepherd double resulted in two runs for the Hornets tying the game back up at 7-7. Sioux Falls managed to score the winning run with two outs in the seventh inning to take the 8-7 win over the Hornets.
Roni Raines went 3-4 from the leadoff spot for Emporia State with 2 RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Abbey Ward went 2-3 while also scoring twice.
Emporia State will travel south on I-35 on March, 11 for a doubleheader against Central Oklahoma. The games are scheduled for 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. from Edmond. Okla.
