February 26, 2022 – Emporia State split their first two games in the Washburn Classic with a 13-2 run-rule victory over Wayne State before falling 10-5 against Missouri-St. Louis.
Game 1
The Hornets started their weekend from the beginning with
Abbey Ward and
Lexi Williams each drawing walks.
Brittanie Shepherd came to the plate and laced an RBI double to score Ward give Emporia State two runners in scoring position.
Josie Harrison scored Williams and advanced Shepherd to third base on an RBI groundout to the right side.
Karly Johnson boosted the lead to 3-0 two batters later with an RBI single. The Hornets would score two more runs after some defensive mistakes by the Wildcats. The inning would be capped off by a
Harley Sturm single to give the Hornets a 6-0 lead.
Wayne State was able to get on the board in the second inning thanks to a pair of RBI doubles as the Wildcats trimmed the Hornet lead to 6-2.
The Hornets would add to their advantage in the fourth inning as
Abbey Ward homered to left field. Emporia State added three more runs to take a 10-2 lead over Wayne State due to more defensive mistakes and a
Roni Raines RBI single.
Looking to clinch the run-rule victory the Hornets added three more in the fifth and took the win 13-2 in five innings.
Josie Harrison was one of six Hornets to record an RBI as she had 3 in the game.
Game 2
After two quiet innings by both the Hornets and the Tritons, Missouri-St. Louis scored once in the third before scoring four runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead over Emporia State.
The Hornets fought back to trim the Triton lead to 5-4 after
Josie Harrison laced a two-run home run and
Alexis Dial and
McKensy Glass added RBI hits of their own.
A three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning gave Missouri-St. Louis the cushion they needed to eventually take the game 10-5 over Emporia State.
Alexis Dial had 2 RBI after going 1-2 with a sacrifice fly.
Josie Harrison went 1-2 in the game with 2 RBI, taking her total on the day to five.
The Hornets are back in action Sunday, February 27 as they will take on St. Cloud State at 11:30 a.m. and Southwest Minnesota at 5:30 p.m.
