February 21, 2022 – The Hornet softball team swept the Tritons of UMSL on Monday with a shutout 4-0 win in game one and a 5-1 win in game two.
Game 1
The Hornets jumped in front early in the first inning.
Abbey Ward would draw a leadoff walk for Emporia State and then after advancing on a groundout and then stealing third base,
Brittanie Shepherd would drive her in with an RBI groundout to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
Emporia State struck again in the third inning with
Roni Raines recording an RBI single to score
Lexi Williams. The final runs for Emporia State would come in the fourth inning with
Karly Johnson lacing a two-run homerun over the left field wall.
In the circle,
Josie Harrison pitched a one-hit shutout that included seven strikeouts and only two walks.
Game 2
In game two of the doubleheader, Missouri-St. Louis would strike first. After two scoreless innings from both teams, Jenna Towle got the Tritons on the board with a sacrifice fly.
The Hornets would respond well in the bottom half of the third as
Roni Raines reached on a bunt single down the third base line that resulted in a pair of runs due to a throwing error by the defense. After advancing on a passed ball,
Abbey Ward recorded a sacrifice fly to score Raines. Later in the inning with two outs,
Josie Harrison singled to score
Lexi Williams to give the Hornets a 4-1 lead over the Tritons.
Emporia State would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Lexi Williams recorded an RBI single to score
Roni Raines.
It was another gem in the circle for the Hornets as
Sydney Righi went 6.0 innings allow 1 run and striking out three batters.
Brylie Bassett would finish the game without allowing a hit.
