February 20, 2022 – The Emporia State baseball team was swept by MSU Denver on Sunday. The Hornets fell 7-0 in the first game and 9-7 in the second.
Game 1
The Hornets held the Roadrunners scoreless for three innings. MSU Denver finally scored in the fourth inning when Zach Schuler launched a two-run homer over the centerfield wall to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, MSU Denver added another two-run homer by Caleb Albaugh to double the lead. The Roadrunners would score three more runs in the seventh inning to go up 7-0 on the Hornets.
The Emporia State offense was shut down with only one hit and two walks drawn in the game.
Aaron Bechtel recorded 5.0 innings and allowed four runs and struck out four batters.
Game 2
Unlike the beginning of the first game, the offense took off immediately. Chase Anderson led off the game with a homerun to left center to give MSU Denver a 1-0 lead. Despite allowing a pair of walks,
Peyton Carson got out of the first inning only allowing the single run.
In the bottom of the first,
Sam Chaput singled on the first pitch before advancing to second on a throwing error.
Blake Carroll followed the Chaput single with one of his own to tie the game 1-1. Carroll advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. After
Chandler Bloomer drew a walk,
Lukas Rich drove in Carroll with an RBI single and with two outs
Jack Maki drove in Bloomer with an RBI single of his own to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead over MSU Denver.
The lead for the Hornets would not last long as Caleb Albaugh recorded an RBI single to trim the Emporia State lead down to 3-2. Bill Ralston followed the Albaugh single with an RBI double to tie up the game before Ross Smith hit a two-run home run to give the Roadrunners a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Blake Carroll doubled to left field, scoring
Dylan Werries to cut the Roadrunner lead in half.
In the fifth inning, MSU Denver recorded three more runs to take an 8-4 lead over Emporia State. The Roadrunners would score another run thanks to a Blake Mattey sacrifice fly.
In the eighth inning,
Blake Carroll hit his second double of the game and recorded his third and fourth RBIs of the game when he drove in
Brenden Tauber and
Blake Carroll.
Kadyn Williams would immediately follow with an RBI single to drive in
Blake Carroll and trim the MSUD lead to 9-7.
Peyton Carson started in the second game for the Hornets and recorded 1.2 innings with five runs and one earned run. He also tallied a pair of strikeouts.
Blake Carroll paced the offense going 3-5 in the game with two doubles, two runs and four RBI.
Lukas Rich,
Kadyn Williams, and
Jack Maki each recorded an RBI in game two.
The two teams will finish up the four-game series on Monday afternoon. First pitch from Glennen Field is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
