EMPORIA STATE ROLLS INTO MIAA PLAY

Hornets win 5-1 over the Lopers

September 24, 2021 – Mackenzie Dimarco recorded a hat-trick while Joanie Westcoat and Aislinn Hughes added to the total to propel Emporia State to a 5-1 win over Nebraska-Kearney on Friday afternoon at the ESU Pitch.

After recording five shots and being held scoreless for nearly 30 minutes, Mackenzie Dimarco got on the board for the Hornets with a right-footed goal. Roughly 60 seconds later, on the receiving end of a Joanie Westcoat corner kick, Aislinn Hughes was able to get the ball over the line and double the lead for the Hornets.

Later in the first half, Emporia State won themselves a corner and Westcoat again took it. This time she scored directly from the corner kick into the top right corner of the goal to push the Hornet lead to 3-0.

At halftime, the Hornets maintained their 3-0 lead and had tallied 12 shots while holding the Lopers to none.

In the second half, it was the Lopers who scored first with Ariella Mesa scoring from outside the box into the bottom left corner.

The Hornets responded well by adding their fourth goal only 90 seconds later. Mackenzie Dimarco received a pass from Liz Palmer and scored this time with her left foot for her second goal of the match.

Emporia State would reach 5 goals with 20 minutes remaining as Dimarco found her way again into the box after a pass from Sydney Martens. Dimarco would finish the play and cap her hat-trick for the afternoon.

With the win Emporia State improves to 6-0-1 on the season. They will be back in action Sunday afternoon as they open MIAA action with a rematch against Fort Hays State. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from the ESU Pitch.
