#15 EMPORIA STATE SOCCER SCORES FIVE SECOND HALF GOALS IN 5-1 WIN AT CSU-PUEBLO

Second straight match with five goals for Hornets

September 10, 2021-For the second straight match #15 Emporia State scored five goals as the defeated Colorado State-Pueblo 5-1 on Friday night in Pueblo, Colo.
 
After a scoreless first half that saw the Hornets out shoot the Thunderwolves 9-3, Emporia State turned it up in the second half.  In the 49th minute Alexis Cole stepped in front of a goal kick and fed Hannah Woolery who's shot from just outside the penalty area hit the crossbar and bounced in to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
 
Mackenzie Dimarco made it 2-0 when she got a pass about 40 yards out and beat a defender one on one before putting a shot past the keeper in the 63rd minute. CSU-Pueblo got their only goal of the match a minute later when Porsche Nieto's shot from about 35 yards out snuck in over Hornet keeper Jillian Patton to make it 2-1.
 
It would remain a one goal game until the Hornets put on a blitz in the last ten minutes. Angie Palmer sent a cross to Kyleigh Roe right in front of the goal box and she directed it in to give Emporia State a 3-1 lead in the 81st minute.  Woolery got her second goal of the match when she took a ball from the left side to the right, then back to the middle before finding the upper left hand corner of the goal from 20 yards out to make it 4-1 in the 84th minute.   Liz Palmer put the finishing touches on with a header off a Joanie Westcoat corner with 1:43 left for the final score of 5-1.
 
For the match Emporia State outshot CSU-Pueblo 24-9 with a 13-4 advantage on goal.  The Hornets had a total of 11 corner kicks compared to just one by the Thunderwolves.
 
Emporia State will wrap up their stay in Colorado on Sunday when they take on Colorado Christian.  Kick-off from Lakewood, Colo. is set for 2:00 p.m. (CT).
