October 24, 2021-Playing their final regular season home match, #15 Emporia State came back from a 3-1 second half deficit to defeat #8 Central Missouri 4-3 in double overtime on Sunday at the ESU Pitch.
Aislinn Hughes scored the golden goal with less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime for the Hornets.
Hannah Woolery gave Emporia State a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when she took the ball at midfield, took it down the left side, made a move on a defender in the box and put the ball past the UCM keeper who came out to challenge.
Ten minutes later Sydney Leslie scored on a free kick from about 35 yards out for the Jennies as the teams went to the half tied at 1-1.
Caroline Cole put the Jennies up 2-1 when she took a pass from Kassie Newsom on the left side and fired a shot past a diving
Jillian Patton into the right side of the goal in the 54
th minute.. UCM went up two goal just over eight minutes later when Leslie scored her second goal when her shot deflected off
Kailey Corr and just sneaked under the cross bar.
Emporia State began their comeback in the 67
th minute when
Liz Palmer scored following a Woolery corner kick to make it 3-2. The Hornets tied the game when
Aislinn Hughes converted a header following another corner, the eighth of the match by ESU, from Woolery with just 4.3 seconds remaining.
The two teams were scoreless in the first overtime and the first six minutes of the second until Hughes went high in front of the goal and headed Lakin's flip throw down into the goal on the left side for the game winner.
Emporia State outshot Central Missouri 24-9 on the match with a 16-6 advantage after half time. The Hornets finished the match with nine corner kicks while the Jennies did not have one.
With the win Emporia State moved into first place in the MIAA by two points over Central Missouri and three over Central Oklahoma with two matches remaining. The next action for the Hornets will be on Friday, October 29 when they go on the road to Washburn for the second edition of the Turnpike Tussle. Kick-off from Topeka, Kan. is set for 6:00 p.m. at Yager Stadium.
