Kyleigh Roe scoreswith just over two minutes left in first overtime

October 1, 2021-In a match that could eventually be a defining moment of their season, #6 Emporia State came from behind to defeat Missouri Western 3-2 in overtime on Friday night in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Hornets fell behind early as Evelyn Daly scored on a free kick from 40 yards out on the left side of the field.  ESU keeper Jillian Patton was shielded on the play by MWSU's Eszter Toth who tried to redirect the kick but missed it as the Griffons took a 1-0 lead 10:55 into the match.

It would remain 1-0 at the half although the Hornets enjoyed a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks and 4-3 edge in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Emporia State would finally draw even in the 53rd minute.  Ashlyn Lakin's flip throw in from the right side was headed to the goal and Griffon keeper Anna Mayer tried to punch it away only to see the ball get deflected into the goal to make it 1-1.

Following a free kick by Daly, Jaden Skinner served a cross from 38 yards out on the right side that Kaili Campbell was able to head into the left side of the goal in the 77th minute to give Griffons a 2-1 lead.

Emporia State answered back three and a half minutes later. Gaby Crowell fired a shot from 25 yards out that Liz Palmer redirected past the keeper from about nine yards out for the equalizer with 9:55 left in regulation.

Both teams had chances to win it in the final four minutes of regulation.  Mackenzie Dimarco stepped in front of an outlet pass for a steal and let a shot fly from 25 yards out that Mayer was able to knock down with 3:23 left.  The Griffons came down field and Toth had a break away chance but Patton came out to the edge of the box to make the save as the teams headed to overtime.

The Golden Goal came with just 2:03 left in the first overtime.  Lakin served a flip throw into the front of the goal and Roe was able to head it into the top of the goal and give the Hornets a 3-2 victory.

Emporia State, now 8-0-1 on the season, outshot Missouri Western 18-13 and had a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks in the match.

The Hornets will stay on the road this weekend as they travel to Northwest Missouri on Sunday afternoon.  Kick-off from Maryville, Mo. is set for 1:00 p.m.
