September 24, 2019-Emporia State took fifth ranked Washburn to extra points in the third set but could not pull off the upset in a 25-17, 25-16, 28-26 loss on Tuesday night in White Auditorium.

The Hornets scored the first two points of the match and were tied at 7-7 before the Ichabods went on a 9-3 run to take control of the set. Emporia State would close back to within 20-16 on a
Jessica Hayes kill before Washburn scored five of the final six points for the 25-17 win.

The second set was again tight through the first 17 points with Washburn leading 9-8. They used a 5-0 run with three kills from Genna Berg to take a 14-8 lead. Emporia State score four straight points to pull back within 17-14 and force an Ichabod timeout. They finished the set on an 8-2 run for a 25-16 win and 2-0 lead in the match.

Emporia State fell behind 6-1 to open the third set but then went on a 7-1 run of their own to go up 8-7. The lead would reach four on four occasions and the Hornets still led 21-18 when the Ichabods called their final timeout. Washburn scored three straight out of the timeout to tie the score at 21. The teams traded side outs over the next ten points, with Emporia State having two set points before Washburn scored two straight for their first match point. The Hornets were able to fight off one match point before Allison Maxwell and Allison Sadler combined on a block to end the match for Washburn with a 28-26 win.

Aliyah Bernard led Emporia State with six kills, six block assists and a solo block while
Mikayla Simons had seven kills on .500 hitting with a block assist and a solo block.Â
Rylie Fornelli had a team high ten digs with five coming in the third set when she moved to libero. The Hornets only had 11 attack errors compared to 21 in the match for the Ichabods but Emporia State only converted on 28 kills compared to 50 for Washburn.

Emporia State will be back in action on Thursday when they play host to Missouri Western. First serve in White Auditorium is set for 6:00 p.m. Â
