Box Score September 13, 2019-Emporia State opened the Mountain Lion Invitational with a 3-0 sweep of host Colorado-Colorado Springs on Friday morning in Colorado Springs.
The Hornets jumped out to an 8-2 lead to open the first set and never trailed. They used a 6-0 run to take a 19-9 lead and coasted to a 25-17 victory.
The second set saw the Mountain Lions take the early lead at 9-3. Emporia State then went on a 7-1 run to tie the score at 10-10. UCCS took a 16-13 lead when the Hornets six straight points to go up 19-16. Emporia State appeared to have a 20-16 lead but a replay challenge overturned the call to make it 19-17. The score would be tied at 20, 21, 22 and 23 before the Hornets scored the final two points to take the 25-23 victory.
Neither team would take a big lead in the third set with Emporia State taking the largest advantage at 11-7. There would be a total of ten ties in the match, the last coming at 23-23 before the Hornets closed out the match thanks to a pair of attack errors by UCCS.
Mikayla Simons had 11 kills on .348 hitting to go with two block assists and six digs and was joined in double figures by
Allie Christensen with ten kills on .333 hitting.
Shelby Innes had a team high 17 digs while
Emma Dixon dished 32 assists.
Yuchen Du and
Aliyah Bernard each had four blocks.
The Hornets will wrap up day one of the Mountain Lion Invitational with a match against Angelo State at 2:00 p.m. (Central Time) in Colorado Springs.
NOTES
The Hornets 4-1 start is their best opening to a season since going 4-1 to open the 2014 season.
