September 13, 2019-Emporia State came back from two sets down to force a fifth set before falling to Angelo State 3-2 in their second match on Friday afternoon at the Mountain Lion Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Hornets trailed 8-6 when the Belles ran off eight straight points to take a 16-6 lead in set one. Angelo State scored six of the final seven points on the way to a 25-10 win.

Emporia State led 11-8 in the second set before a 5-0 run gave Angelo State the lead for good. After a block from
Mikayla Simons and
Shelby Ebert broke the run, the Belles scored six straight points to take control on the way to a 25-15 win.

In the third set the Hornets trailed 21-16 before going on a 7-0 run on
Emma Dixon's serve to take a 23-21 lead. Angelo State scored twice to tie the score but a Belle service error gave the Hornets set point and Ebert and Simons combined for another block to give Emporia State a 25-23 win.

Trailing 10-7 in the fourth set the Hornets went on another 7-0 run on Dixon's serve to take a 14-10 lead. Angelo State would not get closer than three points the rest of the set as
Yuchen Du recorded a kill to end the set at 25-22 and force a fifth set.

Orianna Clements got a kill to start the scoring for Emporia State in the fifth set but Angelo State would go on a 5-1 run to take the lead for good. The Hornets would pull to within 9-7 before a 3-0 run gave the Belles a five point cushion on the way to a 15-10 win.

Mikayla Simons had 16 kills on .361 hitting with four blocks, four digs and two service aces to lead the Hornets. She was joined in double figures in kills by
Aliyah Bernard with 15 kills on .556 hitting and
Yuchen Du with 12 kills.Â
Shelby Innes had a match high 23 digs while
Emma Dixon had 51 assists.

The Hornets are back in action on Saturday morning when they take on Ark.-Ft. Smith. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. (Central Time) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
