January 7, 2019-Braxton Marstall earned another post season honor to lead a total of three Hornets on the Don Hansen All-Super Region Three Football team. The senior quarterback from Emporia, Kan. was named second-team quarterback and was joined on the All-Super Region Team by Third-Team selections Landon Nault at running back and Jace McDown at linebacker.
Marstall finished seventh in the Harlon Hill Trophy balloting for the best player in NCAA Division II Football. A five-time MIAA Offensive Player of the Week winner, Marstall was named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Year and finished the season 296 of 478 passes for 3,049 yards and 29 touchdowns through the air while adding 423 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. He led the MIAA in total offense, passing offense, passing TDs, points responsible for, completions and completion percentage while ranking third in rushing touchdowns. He is seventh in the nation in points responsible for, 15th in passing yards, 17th in total offense and 18th in passing touchdowns. He has five games with at least 300 yard passing this season and has thrown multiple touchdown passes in nine games. He is the Emporia State career record holder with 9,918 passing yards, 87 touchdowns passes and 11,156 yards total offense. He is ranked second in the MIAA in career total offense and fifth in career passing in the league.
Nault led the MIAA in total rushing yards and earned second team All-MIAA honors for the Hornets. He had 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground for Emporia State and had 1,316 combined yards from scrimmage on the season. He led all running backs with 308 receiving yards. Nault became the first Hornet to gain 1,000 rushing yards in a season since Tyler Paul in 2003. He finished sixth at Emporia State with 3,026 career rushing yards, despite playing in an offense that featured the first and second ranked passers in school history along with the most prolific pass catcher in Hornet history. He also earned First-Team Google Cloud Academic All-American honors.
McDown was named Second-Team All-MIAA at linebacker. He led the MIAA in solo tackles, total tackles and forced fumbles while ranking second in the nation in total forced fumbles and fourth in total solo tackles and total tackles.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010, started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003. The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2017 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be selected. The MIAA has a total of 41 players from ten of the 12 league schools represented on the Hansen All-Region Team.
The Hornets were 8-4 on the season and won the Corsicana Bowl in their fifth trip to the postseason in the last seven years. Emporia State is set to return 39 letter winners including 13 starters, ten on defense and three on offense.
