EMPORIA STATE'S HOLMAN NAMED MIAA PITCHER OF THE YEAR IN BASEBALL

Senior hurler headlines seven Hornets with All-MIAA honors

May 10, 2018-Seth Holman was named the MIAA Pitcher of the Year to highlight seven Emporia State players that earned All-MIAA honors this season.  He was joined on the First-Team by outfielder Bryce Fischer while pitcher Tanner Cairns and catcher Mason Brown were named to the Third-Team.  First baseman Kaden Shaffer, second baseman Brian Grove and outfielder Mack Gowing earned honorable mention with Brown, Shaffer and Fischer each earning a Gold Glove.

Holman was 6-3 on the year with a 3.79 ERA and 102 strikeouts and only nine walks in 95.0 innings pitched. He is third in the nation in strikeout to walk ratio. He is the only pitcher in Division II and joins Auburn's Casey Mize as the only pitchers in the country regardless of NCAA Division with over 100 strikeouts and less than ten walks on the season. His nine walks rank second in the nation, he is third in the nation with 14 starts and 15th in total strikeouts. He had nine quality starts on the year, three of which he received a no decision in.

Fischer leads the MIAA in on base percentage, ranks second in batting average, slugging percentage and RBI, is third in hits and fourth in home runs and runs scored. He is batting .404 with 13 home runs, 60 RBI, 53 runs scored, 16 doubles, 11 stolen bases, a .707 slugging percentage and a .504 on base percentage. He has not committed an error in the outfield in 89 chances with four outfield assists.

Cairns was 8-1 on the year with a 4.69 ERA and 57 strikeouts.  He leads the MIAA in victories with eight this season and is 17-3 in his career with the Hornets.

Brown is batting .294 with four home runs, 37 RBI, 15 doubles, a  .442 slugging percentage, and a .360 on base percentage. He threw out 15 runners trying to steal and had a .993 fielding percentage with only three errors in 411 total chances.

Shaffer hit .328 with two home runs, 42 RBI and 11 doubles. He had four errors in 416 total chances.

Grove hit .309 with four homers, 32 RBI and 51 runs scored. Gowing is batting .330 with a home run, 32 RBI, and 49 runs scored.

The Hornets are 29-20 on the year and went 20-16 in the MIAA. They play Northwest Missouri in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday, May 10 at 12:30 p.m. in Warrensburg, Mo.
