April 16, 2018- Emporia State baseball completed the sweep of Central Oklahoma on Monday with two wins in double header action. The Hornets took game one 14-6 and game two 5-3 over the Bronchos.

Game One
The Bronchos got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning but the Hornets answered quick with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Brian Grove got hit by a pitch and picked off at second base. Bryce Fischer walked and advanced to second as Mason Brown struck out swinging but reached first on a passed ball. Brown advanced to second and Fischer scored on a Kaden Shaffer single through the left side. Taylor Sanagorski struck out swinging and reached first and advanced to second on a throwing error by the catcher that scored Brown to make the score after one inning 2-2.

Teams exchanged outs for three innings until the Hornets broke the streak in the bottom of the fifth. The Hornets got one run on no hits with one error in the fifth as Mack Gowing walked. Fischer walked and advanced Gowing to second. Runners advanced on a passed ball and Gowing scored on a catching error by the third baseman for the Hornets to go up 3-2.

In the top of the sixth the Bronchos got two runs on one hit and one error by the Hornets. The Bronchos followed up with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend their lead to 6-3. The Hornets answered in the bottom of the seventh with five runs on four hits. Brandon Bachar lead off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a single from Grove. Runners advanced when Gowing was walked to load the bases. Fischer hit a double to left center field which drove in Bachar and Grove and advanced Gowing to third. Fischer and Gowing were driven home by a double down the right field line from Brown. Brown advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch to put the Hornets up 8-6.

 In the bottom of the eighth inning the Hornets scored six runs on five hits. Bachar started out th inning for the Hornets with a double down the left field line. Grove put down a bunt single to third base to advance Bachar to third. Grove advanced to second and Bachar scored when Gowing singled through the right side. Fischer drove home Grove and advanced Gowing to third with a double to left field. Brown walked to load the bases with one out. Shaffer reached on an error by the second baseman that scored Gowing and advanced the runners. Kyle Lopez drove in a Fischer with a ground out to first base and Trevor Turner drove home Brown and Shaffer with a single through the left side to end the scoring at 14-6.

The Hornets had 11 hits in the game led by Brian Grove, Bryce Fischer, Trevor Turner and Brandon Bachar each with two hits. Mack Gowing, Mason Brown and Kaden Shaffer each added one hit for the Hornets.

Tanner Cairns started on the mound for the Hornets and pitched 6.1 innings allowing six runs on eight hits with three K's. Trey Taylor came in with one out in the top of the seventh and pitched 0.2 innings allowing just one hit and getting the win. Nathan Gieber pitched the final two innings for the Hornets allowing two hits with two K's to get the save.

Game Two
The Bronchos got on the board first with one run in the top of the first inning but the Hornets answered quick with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Brian Grove lead off with a double to right center field and advanced to third on a sac bunt from Mack Gowing. Bryce Fischer hit a two-run home run to left field put the Hornets up 2-1.

After retiring batters in order in the bottom of the second inning the Hornets extended their lead to 3-1. Tanner Arst singled through the left side and advanced to second when Kyle Lopez walked. Grove singled up the middle to drive home Arst from second.

The Bronchos closed the gap to 3-2 with one run in the top of the third inning, but the Hornets extended their lead back to two runs with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Lopez hit a double to left center field and advanced to third on a passed ball before Brandon Bachar hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Lopez home.

In the bottom of the sixth the Hornets scored one run to extend their lead to 5-2. Trevor Turner reached first on an error by the third baseman and advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt by the pitcher. Lopez drove Turner home with a sacrifice fly. In the top of the seventh the Bronchos got one run on three hits to close the gap to 5-3 and end scoring for the game.

The Hornets had six hits in the game led by Brian Grove with two hits and one run. Bryce Fischer, Tanner Arst, Kyle Lopez and Brandon Bachar each had one hit for the Hornets.

Taylor Thompson started on the mound for the Hornets and pitched 4.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits with one K. Drew Scrimsher replaced Thompson and pitched 2.0 innings allowing one run on three hits with three K's before being replaced by Layne Downing. Downing pitched two innings allowing just one hit before Gieber pitched the final out for the Hornets getting a save and one K.

The Hornets are back in action on Tuesday as they travel to St. Joseph, Mo to take on Missouri Western.
