April 15, 2018- Emporia State Baseball takes game one 17-7 over Central Oklahoma in eight innings. The Hornets had 19 hits in the run rule win on Sunday.

After retiring batters in the top of the first inning the Hornets exploded for an eight-run bottom of the first. Brian Grove lead off with a double to center field followed by a single bunt from Mack Gowing and a walk for Bryce Fischer. Grove scored on a single from Mason Brown that advanced the runners. Taylor Sanagorski singled through the right side to drive home Fischer and Gowing and advance Brown to second base. Trevor Turner kept it going for the Hornets with an RBI single that brought Brown home from second. Tanner Arst got the sixth hit in the inning with an RBI single to right center field that advanced Turner to third and scored Sanagorski. With a runner on first and third Brandon Bachar capped off the Hornets first inning with a three-run home run over the right field fence.

In the top of the second the Bronchos closed the gap to 8-3 with three runs on one hit in the inning. The teams exchanged outs for the next two innings before the Hornets scored one run in the bottom of the fifth. Kaden Shaffer lead off the inning and was hit by pitch, advanced to second on a sac bunt from Sanagorski, then driven home by Turner with a double down the right field line.

The Bronchos answered with one run on two hits in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 9-4. In the bottom of the inning the Hornets extended their lead with three runs on three hits. Grove lead off the inning for the Hornets with a single to second base and advanced to second when Gowing walked. The two runners scored on a double to right center field from Fischer who later scored on a single up the middle from Shaffer.

In the top of the seventh the Bronchos got three runs on five hits to close the gap to 12-7. The Hornets answered again in the bottom half of the inning with  runs on  hits. Bachar was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a Grove walk. Gowing reached on an error by the third baseman which advanced Grove to third and scored Bachar. Grove scored when Brown hit a double to right center field. Shaffer singled through the right side to score Brown before Sanagorski singled and advanced Shaffer to third base to finish the inning with the Hornets up 15-7.

Tanner Arst lead off the bottom of the eighth for the Hornets with a single to right field and advanced to second on a Bachar walk. Gowing reached first by base on balls before advancing to second on a wild pitch that scored Arst. Fischer walked and advanced to second when Brown was walked to load the bases. With bases loaded Shaffer hit a walk off single to left field for the run rule win 17-7.

At the plate the Hornets had 19 hits in the game led by Kaden Shaffer with four hits in five at bats. Trevor Turner had three hits followed by Brian Grove, Bryce Fischer, Mason Brown, Taylor Sanagorski and Tanner Arst each with two hits. Mack Gowing and Brandon Bachar each added one hit for the Hornets with Bachar getting the Hornets lone home run in the game.

Seth Holman started on the mound for the Hornets and pitched 6.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits with five K's before being replaced by Layne Downing to start the seventh. Downing pitched 0.2 innings allowing three runs on five hits before being replaced by Trey Taylor. Taylor finished the game for the Hornets pitching 1.1 innings allowing just one hit with two K's.

The Hornets will be back in action on Monday as they wrap up the series with a double header against Central Oklahoma.
