April 11, 2018- Emporia State Baseball fell 8-7 to Washburn on Wednesday in the second meeting of the Turnpike Tussle. The Hornets were out hit 11-6 in the game while each team had two errors.
The Ichabods got on the board first with one run in the bottom of the first inning but the Hornets were quick to answer with a run in the top of the second. Kaden Shaffer singled up the middle and stole second. Mason Brown singled through the left side advancing Shaffer to third before scoring as Trevor Turner grounded into a double play.
In the third inning the Hornets got hot scoring four runs on three hits and one error by the Ichabods. Brandon Bachar doubled to left field and advanced to third on a bunt single from Brian Grove. Grove stole second and Mack Gowing reached first on a throwing error by the short stop which scored Bachar and advanced Grove to third. Gowing stole second and was driven home with Grove by Bryce Fischer who singled up the middle. Fischer stole second and advanced to third on a balk before Shaffer was walked and stole second. Brown hit a sac fly to left field to drive home Fischer to end the scoring for the Hornets in the inning. The Ichabods answered in the bottom half of the inning with four runs on four hits with one Hornet error to tie the game.
The Ichabods took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with one run on two hits and extended the lead to two runs with another run in the sixth inning. Washburn got their final run in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead to 8-5 over the Hornets. The Hornets fought back in the top of the ninth but fell short scoring two runs on one hit with one Ichabod error. Shaffer reached on an error by the second baseman and was driven home by Brown doubling to left center field. Brown advanced to third as Turner grounded out. Tanner Arst hit a sac fly to center field to bring Brown home to finish scoring for the Hornets 8-7.
At the plate the Hornets had five players with at least one hit led by Mason Brown with two hits and two RBI in the game. Connor Burns started on the mound for the Hornets and pitched 0.2 innings allowing one run with one K before being replaced by Taylor Thompson. Thompson pitched 3.1 innings allowing five runs on six hits with four K's before being replaced by Drew Scrimsher. Scrimsher pitched 0.2 innings allowing one hit with one K before Nathan Gieber came in to relieve him. Gieber pitched 2.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits with two K's. Trey Taylor pitched the final 0.2 innings allowing no hits and no runs.
The Hornets will be back in action on Friday April 13 as they take on Central Oklahoma at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia, Kan.
