EMPORIA STATE BASEBALL FALLS IN GAME THREE TO FORT HAYS STATE

Hornets fall 7-4 to Tigers

March 31, 2018- Emporia State baseball fell on Saturday 7-4 to Fort Hays State. The Hornets are now 17-13 on the season, 8-9 in the MIAA.

The Tigers got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning and extended their lead to 3-0 with one in the second. After exchanging outs in the third, the Hornets tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Bryce Fischer walked and advanced on a Kaden Shaffer single. Both players advanced on a wild pitch before being driven home by Trevor Turner with a single on a bunt and Taylor Sanagorski with a sac bunt. In the top of the fifth the Tigers regained the lead 6-3 with three runs and capped off their scoring with one run in the top of the sixth. The Hornets added one run in the bottom of the eighth when Shaffer singled and advanced to second on a Mason Brown single. Turner flied out to advance Shaffer to third and Sanagorski drove Shaffer home with a single through the left side to end scoring at 7-4.

Kaden Shaffer, Brandon Bachar and Mason Brown led the Hornets with two hits on four at bats each followed by Trevor Turner and Taylor Sanagorski each with one hit in three at bats. The Hornets had nine hits and four runs in the game.

Max Simpson started the game on the mound for the Hornets and pitched 4.2 innings allowing six runs on ten hits before being replaced by Connor Burns. Burns pitched 0.1 innings facing one batter before Layne Downing came in to pitch 1.0 innings. Downing allowed just one run on two hits with one K before Nathan Gieber came in to finish the game for the Hornets. Gieber threw 3.0 innings allowing just one hit with four K's.

The Hornets are back in action on Tuesday April 3 as they host Missouri Western at the Trusler Sports Complex.
