October 2, 2018- Emporia State Volleyball won in straight sets over Newman on Tuesday night. The Hornets wrap up non-conference play for the season with the 3-0 win.
The Hornets stayed within reach early in the first set to a tie score of 8-8. The Hornets used a 7-1 run to jump out to a 15-9 lead sparked by a kill by Jordan Evans and would not look back. The Hornets took set one 25-15 to take the 1-0 match lead.
In set two, the Hornets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and held off the Jets attack for the remainder of the set. Leading 16-9, the Hornets sparked a 8-0 run started by a kill from Taylor Otting. The Hornets won set two 25-12 to take the 2-0 match lead.
The Hornets scored the first point of the third set and only allowed the Jets to tie the set once at 1-1 before using a 3-0 run to take the lead 4-1. Although the Jets came within one, the Hornets held the lead through the remainder of the set on their way to a 25-14 set win to finish the match.
The Hornets were led by Taylor Otting with ten kills followed by Tatum Graves with nine and Jordan Evans with eight. Evans had a team high 20 digs for the Hornets while Allie Maloney joined in double digits with 11 and Otting was just one dig shy of a double-double with nine. Jennica Smith and Emma Dixon each had 17 assists for the Hornets.
The Hornets will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Bolivar, Mo. to take on Southwest Baptist.
