May 6, 2017-Emporia State scored seven runs in the first two innings to take control on the way to a 12-1 run rule win over Southwest Baptist in the second game of their series in Bolivar, Mo. on Saturday.
Levi Ashmore led off the game with a single and Alex White gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead one batter later. Four singles, a walk and an error on a sac bunt gave Emporia State a 7-0 lead after two innings. Kaden Shaffer hit a grand slam in the fifth to give the Hornets an 11-0 lead and Mason Brown made it 12-0 with an RBI double in the sixth.
That was more than enough for starter Tanner Cairns, who allowed on run in the bottom of the seventh before he was able to induce a game ending double play. He scattered seven hits as he picked up his seventh win and second complete game of the season.Â
White went three for four with four RBI and a run scored while Shaffer was one for one with the grand slam, three walks and two runs scored.
The Hornets will take on the Bearcats in the final regular season game of the year on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo.
