HORNET SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH LOPERS ON SENIOR DAY

Emporia State took game one 6-2 but dropped the second 4-2

April 8 , 2017 - The Emporia State softball team split games with Nebraska-Kearney on Senior Day, picking up win 25 in game one with a score of 6-2 and dropping game two 4-2. The Hornets are now 25-19 on the year, 10-6 in the MIAA.

GAME ONE
The Lopers took an early 1-0 lead over the Hornets in game one after the first inning but Emporia State answered with three runs on four hits in the second inning. Katie Yoakum singled up the middle to plate the first run. Later in the inning, Sarah Glass smacked a two RBI single to shortstop, giving the Hornets a 3-1 lead. Annie Rockley doubled in the fourth inning to score Caitlin VanVleck and extend the lead 4-1 over the Lopers. Emporia State sealed the win with another two runs in the sixth inning thanks to another Yoakum single, this time bringing in two runs.

Eryn Stockman pitched her 19th complete game of the season, improving to 17-9. Stockman allowed only two runs on eight hits and had four strikeouts with just one walk. Glass hit three for four in game one with two RBI while Yoakum went two for three with three RBI.

GAME TWO
Emporia State was scoreless until plating two runs on a Jacie Stephens double in the bottom of the seventh inning in game two, losing 4-2 against Nebraska-Kearney. Holly Hinkel pitched 7.0 innings, falling to 6-10 on the year. Hinkel allowed four runs on eight hits and had six strikeouts with no walks. Stephens hit three for four with two RBI to lead the Hornets in game two.

Emporia State takes on Washburn in their second Turnpike Tussle of the year on Tuesday, April 11. These games will count toward conference records and will be played in Topeka.
