April 14, 2017-Emporia State and Southwest Baptist traded shutouts in a double header split on Friday in Bolivar, Mo. The Hornets won game one 1-0 while the Bearcats came back for a 3-0 win in game two.
GAME ONE
Emporia State's Eryn Stockman and Southwest Baptist's Kacey Ayers were locked in a pitcher's duel for the first seven innings. The Hornets finally broke through in the first extra inning. Sarah Glass reached on throwing error by SBU shortstop Stormy Christerson with one out. Jacie Stephens followed with a double to left center to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
Stockman went the distance allowing just three hits for her ninth shutout of the season. She had five strikeouts and no walks. Stephens was one for four with a double and the lone RBI of the game. Katie Yoakum was two for three while Hailey Cope went two for four.
GAME TWO
The Bearcats scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first for their first lead of the double header. They added single runs in the third and fifth innings for a 3-0 lead.
Emporia State had just two hits and three base runners off SBU starter Claire Miller. Glass and Stephens each had singles while Katie Rae Nordman reached on a walk. Stockman started in the circle and went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs, two of them earned on eight hits with one strikeout and no walks. Danielle Sprinkle worked the sixth inning and allowed just one hit.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Central Missouri. The first game of the double header is set to begin at 12 noon in Warrensburg, Mo.
