April 1, 2017 - The Emporia State softball team split a non-conference double header with Washburn on Saturday afternoon for their first Turnpike Tussle match-up. The Hornets took game one 7-1 and dropped the second game 3-0.
GAME ONE
The Hornets scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning on the way to their 7-1 win over the Ichabods. Emporia State took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an Annie Rockley double to left center. The third inning did not look promising, as the Hornets retired the first two batters before they went on a rally. The bases were loaded after Hailey Cope doubled followed by two walks. Katie Yoakum had a 2 RBI single through the right side to give Emporia State a 4-0 lead. After Valerie Kinney scored on an Ichabod error to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead, Rockley picked up another RBI on a single through the right side. The two teams went scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings until there was a run a piece in the sixth inning to put the game at 7-1.
Rockley and Cope both hit two for four, Rockley with three RBI in game one. Yoakum scored two runs and had two RBI on just one hit. Eryn Stockman pitched her 17th complete game of the season, improving to 15-7 on the year. She allowed just one run on four hits, racking up four strikeouts and no walks.
GAME TWO
Emporia State was shut out in game two, connecting for just three hits. Washburn took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning and scored their other two runs in the fifth inning. Holly Hinkle pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Stockman relieved for 2.1 innings, allowing just two hits with no walks.

Emporia State will host Fort Hays in a double header on Friday, April 7 starting at 4:00 p.m. The games will be played on Turnbull Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
