March 31, 2017-For the first time this year the Emporia State men's and women's tennis teams were swept at home on Friday afternoon. The Hornet women lost 6-3 to #18 Oklahoma Baptist while the Emporia State men lost 8-1 to the Bison in a battle of teams ranked in the top ten of the ITA Central Region rankings.
The Hornet women led 2-1 after doubles thanks to a 9-7 win at #2 by Kaley Clark and Sarah Durham and an 8-6 win at #3 by Amy Fugit and Tahlia Walsh. The only win in singles for Emporia State came at #1 as Tawni Griffey took a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over the 36th ranked player in the nation Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg.
Emporia State was only able to pull out one match on the men's side as Anton Levanovich won 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) at #6 singles. He almost had a hand in another win as he and Farhan Sadique took their match at #3 doubles to a tiebreaker before falling 9-7 in the tie break.
The Emporia State women are back in action on Saturday when they play host to #20 Northeastern State at the Milton Courts in the Kossover Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
