EMPORIA STATE VOLLEYBALL ENDS MIAA-GAC CHALLENGE 2-2

The Hornets drop two matches in day two of MIAA-GAC Challenge

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 September 17, 2016 - The Emporia State volleyball team ended the MIAA-GAC Challenge 2-2 after dropping two games on the second day of the tournament. The Hornets lost to Southwestern Oklahoma (20-25, 15-25, 25-21, 25-23, 6-15) in a hard fought five set match and finished on a four set loss (25-16, 18-25, 19-25, 26-28) to host team Oklahoma Baptist.

BACK AND FORTH WITH THE BULLDOGS
After dropping the first two sets to Southwestern Oklahoma, Emporia State forced a deciding fifth set. After the Hornets got an early 2-0 jump, the Bulldogs answered with two points of their own to tie it. A 4-1 Emporia State run gave them a 6-3 lead after a Josie Williams kill. The Hornets maintained that lead until the Bulldogs went on an 5-0 run to take a 13-12 lead. Emporia State scored only two of the next six points to take a timeout trailing 17-14. The Hornets would not regain the lead the rest of the set. The largest margin in set one was four points, the Bulldogs ending on a 5-2 run.

Again in set two, the Hornets had an early 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs fought back, tying it several times until a final tie at 7-7. Southwestern Oklahoma would take the lead and keep it after that, heading to a 25-15 win over Emporia State.

In set three there were four ties before Emporia State took advantage of a 7-0 run, started by back-to-back-to-back Williams kills, to lead 15-11. The Hornets held onto the lead until a 19-19 tie. Emporia State finished the set on a 6-2 run to win 25-21 to take it to a fourth set.

In a hard fought set four there were ten tied scores, with Emporia State coming out on top 25-23 to force a fifth and final set. Three of the Hornets' last four points in the fourth set were kills from Danika Burton.

Southwestern Oklahoma had a quick 6-2 jump before Emporia State took a timeout to regroup. The Hornets would score only four more points to lose 15-6 in the fifth set, taking their first loss in five set matches this season.

Williams had a career high 20 kills after tying a previous career high Friday, Sept. 16 against Southern Nazarene with 19 kills. She added another double-double on the year with ten digs and had a .333 hitting percentage with three block assists. Burton and Shayla Cotman each had nine kills, Cotman with a .389 hitting percentage and Burton with four block assists. Tatum Graves had seven kills on a .385 hitting percentage, Jamie Hauptman with six kills on a .312 hitting percentage. Emma Dixon had 25 assists and eight digs followed by Kimberly Bell with 18 assists. Allie Maloney had 13 digs against the Bulldogs. Emporia State had seven team blocks compared to Southwestern Oklahoma's one team block.

WRAPPING UP THE WEEKEND
Emporia State dominated Oklahoma Baptist in set one with a 25-16 win, holding the Bison to just a .068 hitting percentage. The Hornets never trailed in set one, having one tie at 1-1.

The Hornets trailed 5-4 in the second set before going on a 3-0 run to take a 7-5 lead with the help of two kills from Taylor Otting. A 6-0 run by the Bison gave them an 11-7 lead. Oklahoma Baptist maintained the lead the rest of the set to win 25-18 and tie the game at one set a piece.

Oklahoma Baptist had an early 4-0 jump on Emporia State before the Hornets went on a 7-0 run to lead 7-4 and force a Bison timeout. After the timeout, Oklahoma Baptist answered with an 8-1 run of their own to take a 12-8 lead. Emporia State went on another run, this time 5-1 to tie the game 13-13 after a block from Burton and Julia Joseph. There was two more ties before the Bison took the lead and control to win 25-19.

The largest lead of the first half of set four was a 15-12 Oklahoma Baptist advantage, forcing Emporia State to take a timeout. The Bison kept that lead until the Hornets scored two straight two tie the game 18-18 after a Graves and Hauptman block, forcing an Oklahoma Baptist timeout. There were another four tied scores before Emporia State took a 23-22 advantage on a kill from Williams to force yet another Bison timeout. There were four more tied scores until Oklahoma Baptist finished the match on a 3-0 run to take the set and the game.

Hauptman led Emporia State with 15 kills on a .375 hitting percentage. Williams recorded another double-double with 12 kills and 21 digs also adding three service aces. Burton had eight kills, Otting adding another seven kills. Dixon led again with 22 assists followed by Bell with 20 assists. Both Dixon and Bell had a double-double against Oklahoma Baptist having 10 digs and 12 digs, respectivley. Maloney also had 21 digs followed by Kelly Holden with 16 digs. The Hornets had 102 digs compared to the Bison's 86 digs. Emporia State also had more kills (59 kills) than Oklahoma Baptist (49 kills). This was only the second time this season the opponent had more team blocks than the Hornets.

MIAA PLAY
Emporia State will begin MIAA play with three road games. The first MIAA game will be a Turnpike Tussle in Topeka against #14 Washburn (9-3). First serve will be 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
