EMPORIA STATE VOLLEYBALL IMPROVES TO 7-3 ON DAY 1 OF MIAA-GAC CHALLENGE

Hornets goes 2-0 in day one, defeating both Southern Nazarene and East Central

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 September 16, 2016 - The Emporia State volleyball team went 2-0 in day one of the MIAA-GAC Challenge to improve to 7-3 on the season. The Hornets defeated Southern Nazarene in four sets, 23-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-18, and East Central in three, 25-14, 25-19, 25-18.

BATTLING A STORM
In set one, there were seven tied scores, ending up on an 8-8 tie after a Crimson Storm service error. Southern Nazarene went on a 7-3 run to take a 16-11 lead. Emporia State answered with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game 16-16 after three straight Southern Nazarene attack errors. The two teams fought back and fourth until a final tie at 23-23 from another Crimson Storm service error. Southern Nazarene scored the next to points to take set one 25-23.

The Hornets got off to an early 6-0 lead in set two when the Crimson Storm took a timeout. It did not slow Emporia State down as they continued to dominate set two. The closest Southern Nazarene would get is within five points as Emporia State went on to win set two 25-11. The Hornets had a .536 hitting percentage in set two and allowed only seven kills by the Crimson Storm.

When the scored was tied at 5-5 there had already been five tied scores in set three before Emporia State went on a 6-2 run to take a 7-11 lead over Southern Nazarene. The Hornets would maintain that lead until the Crimson Storm tied it at 19-19 and then took the lead 20-19 on back-to-back kills. On a Kimberly Bell kill, Emporia State tied the game again 20-20. Two straight Southern Nazarene attack errors gave Emporia State a 22-20 lead until the Crimson Storm answered with another two points to tie it a final time at 22-22. The Hornets ended set three on a 3-0 run to win 25-22 on a Tatum Graves kill.

Emporia State never trailed in the fourth set, getting an early 8-2 jump on Southern Nazarene before a timeout was taken. The Hornets came out of the timeout with another three straight points to take a 11-2 lead. The Crimson Storm would get within five at a 22-17 Hornet advantage but would only score one more point the rest of the set.

Josie Williams tied a career high 19 kills, dating back to her freshman year on Sept. 13, 2013 in a five set win against MSU-Moorhead. She had a .342 hitting percentage, adding another double-double to the season with ten digs. Jamie Hauptman had eight kills followed by Tatum Graves with seven kills. Danika Burton led all players with seven block assists while Shayla Cotman had two solo blocks. Bell had 20 assists and nearly missed another double-double of her own with nine digs. She also had four kills against Southern Nazarene. Emma Dixon added another 13 assists. Allie Maloney led the Hornets with 14 digs, Kelly Holden adding nine digs. Williams, Dixon and Maloney each had two service aces. The Hornets held the Crimson Storm to a .081 hitting percentage and had ten team blocks compared to five team blocks for Southern Nazarene.

WRAPPING UP DAY ONE
Emporia State cruised to a three game sweep of East Central to end day one 2-0 at the MIAA-GAC Challenge. The Hornets got an early 11-3 lead before the Tigers took a timeout. Emporia State did not look back, winning set one 25-14, not letting East Central get another closer than nine points after the quick start. The Hornets did not have any hitting errors in the first set fir a .682 hitting percentage.

The Hornets and Tigers fought back and forth for a 5-5 tied game in set two until Emporia State went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-5 lead and force an East Central timeout after back-to-back Julia Joseph kills. The Hornets held onto the lead until the Tigers tied the game again at 15-15 off of an Emporia State attack error. The game was tied again at 17-17 until the Hornets took their final lead to finish the game on a 8-2 run and a kill from Bell.

After an East Central service ace to tie the third set 2-2 when Emporia State took the lead and would not trail the rest of the game. The Hornets forced a timeout after taking an 11-6 lead. The game ended on a block from Burton to win 25-18.

There were no Hornets with double digits kills but there were five with five or more kills. Williams led with nine kills followed by Hauptman and Graves both with seven kills, Burton with six kills and Joseph with five kills. Hauptman had no errors to hit .438 and Graves had only one error for a .462 hitting percentage. Bell had 18 assists and a career high four aces. Dixon added another 13 assists. Maloney led all players with 22 digs with all but one Hornet with at least one dig. Emporia State had seven team blocks, East Central with none. The Hornets only had nine hitting erros in the three sets compared to the Tigers 21 hitting errors. East Central was held to a .099 hitting percentage, Emporia State hitting a season high .290.

UP NEXT
Emporia State will finish play in the MIAA-GAC challenge on Saturday, Sept. 17 starting with an 11:00 a.m. game against Southwestern Oklahoma. The Hornets will then finish with a 3:00 p.m. game against host team Oklahoma Baptist.
