March 5, 2016 - Emporia State split a double header Saturday afternoon with Lincoln, winning the first game 10-0 in five innings and losing 13-12 in the second game. The Hornets are now 11-8, 3-1 in the MIAA.
GAME ON IN GAME ONE
The Hornets started the game with hot bats, the first four batters getting a hit in the first inning. Danielle Sprinkle doubled, sending in Sarah Glass and Caitlin VanVleck to put Emporia State up 2-0. In the third inning it would be Glass to double, sending in Morgan Swisher, putting the Hornets up 3-0. Glass would make it to third to finally steal home and put Emporia State up 4-0. The Hornets would go up 6-0 when Erica Harper hit a two run home run in the third inning. Swisher doubled in the fourth inning to send Katie Yoakum home and take a 7-0 lead. Glass then followed with a two run home run to put Emporia State up 9-0. Sprinkle scored the final run for the Hornets with a solo home run.
GAME TWO
After a scoreless first inning, Emporia State would score two runs from a Marly Carmona double, sending in Casady Marlnee, and a Yoakum single, sending in Carmona, in the top of the first to take the lead. The Blue Tigers would answer with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. With Lincoln up 4-3, both teams would be scoreless in the third. The Hornets had five runs off seven hits in the top of the fourth inning to go up 8-4 until the Blue Tigers answered with four runs of their own to tie the game 8-8 going into the fifth. After a scoreless fifth, Emporia State took a 11-8 lead in the top of the sixth. Lincoln had five runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 13-11 going into the seventh inning. The Hornets would score once more in the top of the seventh to finish the game 13-12.
BY THE NUMBERS
Morgan Swisher was four for eight on the day. Danielle Sprinkle was three for six with four RBI. Sarah Glass was five for nine with four RBI. Erica Harper went five for seven. Marly Carmona went four for seven. Katie Yoakum went five for eight with three RBI. Eryn Stockman picked up a win in the first game, pitching all five innings. Stockman allowed only four hits and had five strike outs with no walks.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will have back-to-back double headers against Washburn for a Turnpike Tussle to continue MIAA play. The first double header will be at home on Friday, March 11. The first pitch will be at 3:00 p.m.
