March 11, 2016 - The Hornet softball team split a double header with Washburn for their home opener Friday. The Turnpike Tussle will continue tomorrow in Topeka.
HORNETS TAKE GAME ONE
Emporia State put a run on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when Sarah Glass tripled to left field sending in Caitlin VanVleck. Washburn answered in the top of the second inning to tie the game 1-1 going into the bottom of the second. The Hornets took the lead for good in the bottom of the second with two runs. Emporia State's other two runs came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Eryn Stockman picked up a win in game one to improve to 7-2 on the season. Stockman allowed only three hits through 7.0 innings pitched. VanVleck went three for four while Glass hit two for three.
ICHABODS COMPLETE SPLIT
Both the Ichabods and Hornets had hot bats in the first inning, scoring two runs each. Emporia State scored again in the third inning to take a 7-2 lead off of six hits and one error. Washburn had three runs in the top of the fifth off five hits and one error to close the gap 7-5. The Ichabods tied the game in the top of the seventh inning to force extra innings, eventually scoring eight runs in the eighth to the Hornets one. Erica Harper went three for four. Marly Carmona and Sarah Glass each went two for five, Carmona bringing in three RBI. Katie Yoakum hit two for three.

The Hornets will continue the Turnpike Tussle Saturday, March 12 in Topeka, Kan. The first pitch of the double header is at 1:00 p.m. at Warren Turner Field.
