Box Score March 19, 2016 - The #22 Hornets improved to 17-5 on the season Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 win over Fort Hays State.
GOOD START
After allowing two runners to get on base on one hit in the top of the first inning Matt Slauter ended Fort Hays' at bat with a strikeout. In the bottom of the inning Wade Hanna put the Hornets up 2-0 with a home run after Levi Ashmore had reached first base on a walk. In the second inning Dalton Wheat scored on a RBI from second baseman Ryan McBroom to give teh Hornets a 3-0 lead. This would be the last score for the Hornets until the bottom of the seventh.
FIGHT TO THE FINISH
Ft. Hays State tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning after scoring one run each in the third, sixth, and seventh innings. The Hornets quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Tucker Perkins scored on an Evan Koehler RBI single to right field. In the eighth inning Hays tied the game again at 4-4 with one run on two hits but left three runners on base. With two runners on and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Wade Hanna clinched the win for the Hornets with a single to left field bringing Tucker Perkins home from third base.
BY THE NUMBERS
Wade Hanna led the Hornets with two hits, three RBI, and one run on the day. Braxton Byfield also had two hits followed by Levi Ashmore, Evan Koehler, Dalton Wheat, and Tucker Perkins each added one hit for the Hornets. Matt Slauter started on the mound for the Hornets, recording three strikeouts and allowed two runs in 5/2innings before being replaced by Grant Bachura. Bachura then pitched 2.0allowing two runs and recording one strikeout. Garrett Brummett picked up the win for the Hornets after pitching the final 1.1 innings, allowing no runs and only one hit.
UP NEXT
Emporia State will go for the sweep on Sunday when they take on Ft. Hays State in the final game of the three game set. First pitch at the Trusler SPorts Complex is set for 12 noon.
