EMPORIA STATE SOFTBALL SPLITS DAY TWO AT SOUTHEASTERN REGIONAL INVITE

Hornets get 9-2 win following 18-3 loss

February 6, 2016 – Emporia State earned a split on the second day of the Southeastern Regional Invitational in a rain soaked Durant, Okla. on Saturday.  Start of play was delayed nearly six hours by overnight rains in the area.

The Hornets defeated Southwestern Oklahoma 9-2 to salvage the split after falling 18-3 to Oklahoma Christian in the first game.

A three run first followed by a seven run second by Oklahoma Christian put Emporia State in a deep hole in the first game.  The Hornets finally scored when Jacie Stephens singled to shortstop in the fourth inning to plate Erica Harper. Caitlin VanVleck and Katie Yoakum both scored in the fifth when Danielle Sprinkle reached on a throwing error by the OC catcher.

Hannah Wright took the loss, allowing ten runs, but only one earned in 1.2 innings of work.

Emporia State hit three home runs in their 9-2 win over the Bulldogs.  Morgan Swisher got things started with a lead off homer in the top of the third that would lead to a five run inning for the Hornets.  After SWOSU cut the lead to 5-2 with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, Sarah Glass made it 6-2 with a lead off home run in the top of the fifth. Caitlin VanVleck put the finishing touches on with a two run shot in the top of the seventh to cap a three run inning.

Glass was three for four with two runs and two RBI while VanVleck went two for three with two runs and two RBI.  Danielle Sprinkle had a team best three hits and scored a run.

Eryn Stockman went the distance in the circle, giving up two unearned runs on three hits while striking out eight.

Emporia State is scheduled to wrap up play at the Southeastern Regional on Sunday with games against Arkansas Tech and a rematch with Henderson State.
