February 7, 2016-Emporia State was shut out twice on the final day of the Southeastern Regional Invitational in Durant, Okla. on Sunday. The Hornets fell 1-0 to Henderson State and 6-0 to Arkansas Tech.
AGAINST HENDERSON STATE
Hornet Hannah Wright tossed a three hitter and allowed just one unearned run with six strikeouts and only one walk in the 1-0 loss to the Reddies in the first game of the day. Henderson State's Michelle Sorenson matched here with a no-hit shutout with seven strike outs and three walks. The Reddies broke the scoreless tie in the fifth when Alexis Morton reached on a one out error. She advanced when Sorenson's fielder's choice was misplayed for the second error of the game. After a ground out put runners at second and third with two outs, Courtney Warren singled to left driving in the only run of the game. It was the first time the Hornets have been no hit since a 9-0 loss at Truman on April 6, 2001.
AGAINST ARK. TECH
Danielle Sprinkle's single to lead off the second inning against Arkansas Tech was the first hit off Golden Sun pitching in 17 innings. ATU would take a 2-0 lead in the third inning on three hits and an error before Eryn Stockman struck out the final two batters to get out of the inning. The Hornets would load the bases with one out in the fifth on singles by Stockman and Morgan Swisher and a walk to Katie Yoakum. Two ground balls resulted in a out at home and an inning ending ground out to second to end the threat. The Suns went up 5-0 on a three run homer in the bottom of the fifth by Jalissa Gum and added another run with an RBI double by Samantha Herweck in the sixth for the final 6-0 score.
Yoakum and Stockman both reached base twice for the Hornets with a single and walk each. Stockman gave up six runs on 11 hits with six striekouts and only one walk.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will travel to Bentonville, Ark. to take part in the Ark.-Monticello 8-State Classic. Emporia State will open the tourney Feb. 12 at 9:00 a.m. with their third game of the season against Henderson State.
