EMPORIA STATE VOLLEYBALL FORCES FIVE SETS WITH #17 WASHBURN

After being up two sets to none, the Hornets dropped a five set match to the #17 Ichabods

Box Score October 4, 2016 - The Emporia State volleyball team forced five sets with #17 Washburn Tuesday night at home, falling 3-2 (26-24, 26-24, 20-25, 17-25, 15-17). This was the first time since Oct. 11, 2011 that the Turnpike Tussle was decided by five set when the Hornets fell 22-25, 25-18, 27-25, 17-25, 12-15 in Topeka.

There were six tied scores in the first 16 points in set one before Washburn took a 12-10 lead after going on a 4-1 run. Emporia State answered with a 4-0 run that included two Ichabod attack errors, a Danika Burton kill and an Emma Dixon ace to take a 14-12 lead. Back-to-back points from Washburn tied the game back up at 14-14. The Hornets went on a 4-1 run to lead 18-15 before the Ichabods took a timeout. Following the timeout, Emporia State had back-to-back kills from Shayla Cotman and Julia Joseph to force yet another Washburn timeout at a 20-15 Hornet advantage. The Ichabods came out of the timeout with a 3-1 run to close the gap 21-18 when the Hornets took their first timeout. Three points in a row from Washburn after the timeout tied the game again at 21-21. Another Cotman kill followed by an Ichabod setting error gave Emporia State a 23-21 lead. Two Ichabod kills in a row tied the game at 23-23. A kill from Cotman gave the Hornets the first set point at 24-23. The game was tied again at 24-24 when Washburn answered with a kill from Sarah Vicory. After a kill from Jamie Hauptman, Emporia State had a chance at another set point and converted when they ended the set on a block from Burton and Josie Williams.

The Hornets took an early 5-1 lead in the second set from two Hauptman kills, two Williams kills and a kill from Burton. The Ichabods went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 5-5. Neither team took more than a two point lead until Emporia State went on a 3-0 run to force a Washburn timeout and lead 18-15. The Hornets maintained the lead until the Ichabods went on a 3-0 run to take a 22-21 lead and force an Emporia State timeout. A Washburn service error followed by a kill from Williams gave the Hornets a 23-22 lead, the Ichabods taking a timeout. Washburn tied the game again at 23-23 when Williams gave Emporia State their first set point at 24-23 with a kill. Erica Montgomery tied the game 24-24 with a kill for the Ichabods. A block from Hauptman and Burton gave the Hornets another set point at 25-24 when Montgomery had an attack error, giving the set to Emporia State 26-24.

Again in the third set, Emporia State jumped out to a 7-3 lead before Washburn took their first timeout. The Ichabods had a 5-1 run out of the timeout to tie the game 8-8. The lead of either team was never more than two points before the Hornets went on a 5-1 run to lead 18-14 after a Joseph kill. Washburn answered with a 7-1 run before Emporia State took a timeout, trailing 21-19. The Ichabods finished set three on a 4-1 run to take the set 25-20. The Hornets were held to a .087 hitting percentage in the third set. 

After a back-and-forth beginning of set four, the score was tied 5-5 from an Ichabod attack error. Washburn then went on a 6-1 run to take a 11-6 lead when Emporia State took their first timeout. The Ichabods went on a 4-2 run out of the timeout to lead 15-8 and force another Hornet timeout. The largest lead for Washburn in the fourth set was 11 points and they would not give up that lead, taking set four 25-17 and tying the match at two sets a piece.

In the fifth and final set, the Hornets took an early 4-1 lead to force an Ichabod timeout. Washburn had three points in a row to tie the game 4-4. The Ichabods went on a 5-2 run to take a 10-7 lead. Emporia State closed the gap 10-9 after scoring back-to-back points from Cotman and Hauptman kills. A 3-1 run from Washburn gave them a 13-10 lead, forcing an Emporia State timeout. The Hornets answered with a 3-0 run to tie the score 13-13. A kill by Taylor Selk gave Washburn the first match point at 14-13. Hauptman tied the game 14-14 on a kill. A Leanna Willer kill gave the Ichabods another chance at a match point, Washburn leading 15-14. An attack error from Willer tied the game at 15-15. Two back-to-back points from Washburn gave them the set 17-15 and the match 3-2.

Williams had 18 kills, 18 digs and five block assists to lead Emporia State on the night. She was followed by Cotman with 14 kills on a .407 hitting percentage with just three errors. Burton joined in double figures with 11 kills, nearly missing a double-double with nine block assists. Hauptman was just shy of double figure kills with nine kills. Allie Maloney had a match high 38 digs, also beating her previous best 27 digs in three sets against Missouri Southern on Sept. 30. Both setters had a double-double against the Ichabods, Dixon with 31 assists and ten digs, Kimberly bell with 27 assists and ten digs. Kelly Holden had 20 digs on the night. Dixon also had three aces.

Emporia State will host Fort Hays on Friday, Oct. 7 to continue MIAA play. First serve will be at 7:00 p.m. in White Auditorium.
