Emporia State volleyball continues their longest road trip of the season at Missouri Western on Friday and Northwest Missouri on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
Emporia State's string of five set matches was stopped at three in a 3-0 loss at #5 Washburn on Tuesday in Topeka. The Ichabods won 25-18, 27-25, 25-20 in a match that saw 26 ties and 13 lead changes in the final two sets.
Washburn jumped out to a 3-1 lead and never trailed in the first set. A 7-0 run turned a 9-8 set into a 16-8 lead on the way to the 25-18 win. The second set had 16 ties and nine lead changes as both teams fought off a set point before the Ichabods pulled out a 27-25 win. Emporia State took an 11-7 lead in the third set on back to back kills by Katie Deutschmann before Washburn answered with a 6-2 run to tie the score at 13. The two teams traded points until Washburn got back to back points to take a 19-17 lead. They went back and forth again until Washburn scored the final three points of the match for a 25-20 victory.
Carly Spicer had ten kills on .200 hitting and nine digs while Courtney Haring added nine kills on .500 hitting and two blocks. Josie Williams had a team high 11 kills with a .179 hitting percentage and Kelly Holden had 19 digs.
THE COACHES
Bing Xu is 215-88 in his tenth year as the head coach at Emporia State. He has led the Hornets to five NCAA Tournament appearances and has won at least 18 matches in each of the last seven seasons. He is 14-2 against Missouri Western and 16-0 against Northwest Missouri.
Marian Carbin is 16-15 in her second season at Missouri Western. She is 1-1 against Emporia State.
Amy Woerth is 31-40 in her third season at Northwest Missouri. She is 0-2 against Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 4-2 on the season. Carly Spicer is second in the MIAA in kills at 4.00 per set. She had career highs of 21 kills and 16 digs against Illinois-Springfield and has reached double figures in kills in every match this season. Missouri Western is 6-3 on the season, 0-1 in the MIAA after a three set loss to #14 Central Missouri on Tuesday. They are third in the MIAA in team hitting percentage at .290, led by Amanda Boender at .411 to rank fifth individually. Jessie Thorup is sixth and Erica Rottinghaus is ninth in the MIAA in kills per set. Jordan Chohon is second in the MIAA in assists at 11.74 per set.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Northwest Missouri is 4-5 on the season, 1-0 in the MIAA after a five set win over Lindenwood on Tuesday. They are fifth in the MIAA in opponents hitting percentage, holding their foes to just a .163 percentage. Jackie Becker is fifth in the MIAA in blocks at 1.18 per set while Bailey Vance is seventh in digs at 4.35 per set.

LAST TIME AGAINST MO. WESTERN
Emporia State dropped a non-conference match at Missouri Western falling 26-28, 19-25, 25-18, 23-25 in St. Joseph, Mo. There were five ties and two lead changes in the first set. Emporia State led 19-16 before Mo. Western stormed back to take a 28-26 win. The Griffons led from start to finish in a 25-19 decision in set two and the Hornets never trailed in a 25-18 win in the third set. The fourth set saw ten ties and three lead changes with Emporia State taking the biggest lead at 12-8. The Griffons scored three of the final four points to take the match. Courtney Haring, Carly Spicer and Meghan Dugan combined for 35 of the Hornets 58 kills on the night. Dugan had 12 kills on .526 hitting with five blocks. Haring had 12 kills with six blocks and Spicer added 11 kills with four blocks.
LAST TIME AGAINST NORTHWEST MO.
Emporia State volleyball team continued took a five set win at Northwest Missouri. The 30-28, 21-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13 win was the seventh straight for the Hornets. Emporia State twice fought off set points before claiming a victory in the opening set. Courtney Haring and Carly Spicer combined on a block for the final points in the 30-28 win. The teams battled back and forth in the second until the Bearcats closed out the set with a 5-1 run to take the 25-21 victory. After the break the Hornets jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set and never trailed on the way to a 25-21 win of their own. There were eight ties and two lead changes in the fourth set, with neither team building more than a three point lead. Northwest ended up with a 25-22 lead to force the fifth and deciding set. After trailing 7-5 to open the set, Emporia State went on a 5-0 run on Katie Deutshmann's serve to take a 10-7 lead. The Bearcats tied the score a 12 before the Hornets regained the lead on a Spicer kill. Northwest forced another tie at 13 when Deutschmann gave Emporia State match point with a kill. An attack error by NWMSU's Shelby Duren gave the Hornets a 15-13. Paige Vanderpool led the Hornets with 14 kills on .355 hitting with 11 digs. Haring had ten kills and nine blocks while Spicer had 13 kills and three blocks. Brianna Kaiser was the final Hornet in double figures in kills with 11 to go with 12.
