May 1, 2013-The Emporia State baseball team opened the MIAA Opening Round Series with a 10-1 win over Washburn at the Trusler Sports Complex.

Shawn Takington earned the victory for the Hornets, going 7.2 innings and allowing one unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts. Aaron Gile put the first runs of the game on the board in the second inning with a two run homerun. Most of the damage was done in the bottom of the 8th when the Hornets scored six runs on seven hits with a hit batter and a walk.

Gile went two for three with three runs scored and two RBI while Toby Cornejo went two for four with a double, a run scored and an RBI. With the win, Talkington avenged a loss to Washburn and Ash in the first round of the 2012 MIAA Tournament that ended the Hornets season.

Game two of the series is Friday, May 2nd at 6 p.m. at Glennen Field in Trusler Sports Complex.
